Loud Noise From Front Driveshaft?

Recommended Posts

I have an '02, 4x4, 2500 HD, Silverado Extended cab, short bed. There is a loud clunking or thumping noise coming from the front drive shaft. With the shaft in, everything feels tight. It only does this at low speed, or when taking off.

If I take the drive shaft out, it stops. With the shaft out, you can still hear a slight noise, but NOTHING like when it is in.

The truck has the Duramax engine with Allison transmission.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Kevin

If you still hear "a slight noise" with the d/s out, that pretty well tells you that the problem is in the differential (or trans). Could be lots of things but one things for sure, I'd get it fixed before something breaks and you blow the diff big time.

Any ideas? I feel certain that my truck is not the only one that ever had this problem. The noise is getting worse, and it sounds like it is coming from the transfer case. I'm not sure though.

Another problem has appeared. Going down the road minding your own business, and it just goes into neutral. When it happens, the shift selector on the column starts to flash. If you immediately lift the throttle it will go right back into gear. If you have the cruise on, and can't catch it quick enough it won't pull again until you stop, put it in park, and cut off the switch. Crank back up and it shifts perfectly.... Until the next time.

I'm lost...! Help me guys.
