Blazer autotrac switch BAD

Recommended Posts

Well today again my moms blazer wouldnt shift out of 4wd and the service 4wd light came on.  We took it in.

Module was bad it was tripping lots of codes.  They kept it overnight cause they didnt get it all put back together in time

Supposedly this is a very common problem with the blazers.  So common that they replaced it under warranty (25K miles, over 3 yrs old by 2 months)

Is the module the switch or part of it?  My mom said it wasnt the switch that was the problem  ???

Well today my mom called and it is going to cost $500 because it is out of warranty

They dealership is in contact with gm about them covering it but with the holidays no one is there ???  So we are also calling the 1-800 # also

This is ridiculous a known problem and they wont cover it.  Only 25K miles to boot.  I know how you guys with the abs module are feeling now.

I dont think that tahoe is in her future now.

Well the TCC module was bad.  (gmpartszoneonline has it listed at $360)

Ended up getting lucky and only paying $176

Gotta give a nice thanks to the local chevy dealer  :chevy:

Welcome to the world of pushbutton 4wd.  Those systems are crap, every single one of them.  I feel sorry for those unfortunate enough to have to replace those parts out of warrenty.  (Not only on Blazers, but also the full size trucks)

Kansas kid i am starting to feel the way you and Larry do.

In all honesty i expect it to happen on a truck with miles and when the 4wd system is used alot.  But a truck with 25K miles and the 4wd system maybe used 15 times?

Maybe it wasnt used enough?

I dont know  :chevy:

Thats a tough break, Ryan, but good on the price.

The only reason I would want one of those electric 4x4 buttons is if I'm gonna run it at the track.  Launching from the line in 4 wheel is an advantage.  At about 25-30 mph just hit the 2wd button for the remainder of the run.  Thats if the thing "Works" anyhow.

Common problem on Blazers?  NO..it is a common problem with all vehicles with electronic shift.

Oh, boy..this is a big pet peeve of mine. I have bitched and complained about these electronic shift transfercases for years based on my experience working on the Chevrolet Tech Assist hotline in Detroit.  Junk junk junk.  If it is not a control head going south it is an encoder motor.  If it is not an encoder motor then it is the control head.  Then when you are real lucky you will wind up with a transfercase control module failure or wiring harness problem.  Either way the chances of it failing when you the need it the most are extremely high and be ready to pull your wallet out.  Makes me wonder what the #### was ever wrong with levers on the floor anyway.

Bought my wife a Tahoe Z71 in late July. While I like the Tahoe, I kept telling her how much I hate the autocrap feature but it standard equipment on Tacos and Subs so I had no choice. Funny, the very first problem we had was the service transfercase light came on at 3495 miles.  Had to replace the control head - part number 15709327.
