Mystery Goop Makes A Rock Hard Finish

When I was growing up, my dad had this jug of "pink stuff" as we called it. It came in a gallon jug that looked like a windshield washer fluid jug. The "stuff" was the color and consistency of Pepto Bismol. We put this stuff on our trucks and it made a super hard finish. If you coated it with the pink stuff, and threw a coat of wax over it, it would make a diamond hard finish and shine like one too. We put it on my dad's black 98 crew cab and went hunting on West Texas. We drove through mesquite thickets all week long and never put a scratch on the black truck. Awesome stuff.

Problem is, the jug didnt have a lable on it. I called my dad a while back and he said he didnt know what it was, but that it came from his uncle's body shop years ago. So, Im turning to you guys. Does anyone know what this stuff might be, or of anything that might be comparable to the "pink stuff" of my youth?

My poor old truck needs a good wash, scratch treatment, and a wax badly. But, every time I take it to the deer stand, I get new scratches. If I could get something like my old "pink stuff" then it will make the effort to clean her up feel like less of a waste of effort.

Even if you dont know what the "pink stuff" might be, anything that will do create the same effect, let me know. I need some input ASAP.

OH, one last thing. Im a teacher with a 1 year old baby, so money is a definite concideration.

Good luck with that.

Sounds like a sealant, but hard to know just based on a color. Also, what led you to believe it left a "hard finish"? Its not exactly something you can quantify by looking at the paint.

The fact that a mesquite thicket didnt leave a scratch on a black truck. It has to be pretty hard to do that... right?

The two products that Ryan posted would be the only things I'd consider to be a hard finish. A wax or sealant won't really protect from scratches.

Well, maybe a "hard" finish is not the right term. We put this stuff on every time we waxed (which was about every 3- 6 months or so). Maybe it just made a slick finish that the sticks couldnt dig into. I dont know. Im not an automotive detail guy. I wash a few times a year (mostly in the summer since it never rains in the summer), I wax even less that I wash, and I buff using an old, worn out orbital buffer from the stone age. Nothing more than that. Thats why I dont know much about the products and how they compare to the mystery substance I uesd to use. I may try the Adams sealer and see how it compares. It in a price range I can afford.

Are there any old school body guys around here that might know what this stuff is?
