Steering "clunk"

Steering clunk is starting to annoy me now. Will take to the dealer tomorrow afternoon. Just decided this tonight. Don't have an appointment for repair yet.

The problem is worst at low speeds and turning on rough surfaces, but is noticeable during normal driving from time to time as well.

Hope the Steering Column Intermediate Shaft Lubrication fix covered in TSB No.: 00-02-35-003A solves the problem.

I have a slight noise in my steering wheel in my 95. Im not sure if its the same as you have. I feel it either turning left or right and it feels like something is hitting at the top of the column. It is not hurting anything but it is annoying. Has anyone else had this?

I have links below to articles in "GM Tech Link" describing the problem I'm having. These articles apply to '99 and newer trucks. The links are in *.pdf format, so you need an Adobe Reader to view.

I also have a copy of TSB No.: 00-02-35-003A downloaded from alldata.com and stored in word format. All this info will go with me to the dealer tomorrow afternoon.

Go to http://www.alldata.com and click on Recalls and Tecnical Service Bulletins in the title bar. You will then click through a few check boxes to get to all the TSB's for 1995. Unfortunately, unless you have a DIY subscription to Alldata, you will be unable to view the bulletin itself. You will only be able to view the bulletin titles. You might be able to see if a steering related TSB was issued for '95 though.

Thanks , I have already had a peek at them. I was hoping to get something that looked like your tech bulletins. But I will look into them again for fun.

Hello, Actually I found a TSB that might possibly be my trouble from All Data.

 tsb #56-32-02B....Sept 97...Intermittent click noise/snap in steering.

 Can anyone help on this???

                      Thanks. mike

The clunk I had was felt more than heard...  It took the dealer 2 tries to fix it, but it has been perfect ever since.  The tech guy said if the shaft isn't repacked with grease exactly right and then plugged it will come back.  He also changed the type of grease he put in it the second time, because he said GM changed the TSB.

I'm making an appointment to have my truck looked at for the steering clunk also.  I really don't hear it under the hood as some have stated but I can feel it and do hear a rattle at slow speeds like when turning in a parking lot.  It sounds like something is loose in the front end more then the steering, but it's getting louder.

Better have it looked at.  I'm bringing the TSB paper I got from Ryan.

Thanks, Ryan.

I have a '99 1/2 ton 2wd Suburban that might have the "snap Steering" mentioned below.

When making turns especially at slower speeds the steering wheel slips a few degrees.  The Pitman and Idler arms had a bit of play so I replaced them.  The problem still exists.

Anyone find out about the Snap Steering TSB?

Thanks

02Blue, I think the key is the fix mentioned in the 2nd techlink bulletin you posted a link for.

Evidently the greasing is a band-aid fix that isn't permanent, even with the replaced intermediate shaft - my '99 had the first i-shaft replacement, and still wasn't right completely - until you get this bearing replaced.  I would push for that, if I were you.

My 2 cents.  :D

This steering noise seems to be more related to the newer trucks rather than older ones like my 95. Has anyone had this with 95-6's? And was the problem solved?

I just got off the phone with the dealer and they did not give me much info especially on the TSB..

                                             Thanks.

The ONLY thing I accomplished at the dealer today was I got an appointment to take it in NEXT FRIDAY at 1 PM (Friday the 13th). Initially, I was told of a two week backlog. I described the problem and presented the material I'd gathered and then an appointment for one week from today was made. No one looked at the truck at all.

My instincts tell me that next friday at 1 PM they will test drive and then tell me to come back again the following Monday because they can't keep it over the weekend or give me a loaner.

Do you guys find that dealers are this busy when you take a problem in to be worked on?

Sorry topo4u2, don't have anything else to add about your problem. The only access to Alldata and TSB's I have is for the newer trucks only. Good luck and don't give up.

Generally speaking no, but if you're in the cold climates, then at least around here (SE MI) they're fairly busy - holiday season dosn't help either.
