If you're one of those people who pore over the small type in sales reports, you may have noticed a vehicle called the Chevrolet Captiva Sport that turned up for the first time in our October tables. It's a compact crossover -- and you won't see one in a Chevy showroom.

The Captiva Sport, which is built in Mexico on the same platform as the defunct Saturn Vue, is designated a "fleet vehicle." Once it arrives on U.S. soil, each is shipped to a rental car customer as a substitute for the Chevy Equinox.

Put simply, the Equinox is too successful with retail customers to be sold to fleets at discounted prices. Equinox production has been ramped up several times, and some dealers still can't get enough. So GM has made the Captiva the preferred crossover for some fleets. The first Captiva Sports -- 2,140 of them -- were delivered last month.

The Mexican crossover is a win-win-win for GM. Last month it made 2,140 retail consumers who wanted an Equinox happy. The dealers were happy to sell them. And GM didn't have to offer a fleet discount on a popular vehicle.

The Captiva Sport will be available for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2011, as a 2012 model.

The Chevrolet Equinox continues to show strong retail sales growth, with retail sales up 98 percent in February compared with the same month last year. Chevrolet expects sales retail sales to remain strong, in part due to its 32 mpg highway fuel economy rating, higher than the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, or Ford Escape.

which is why the Green 'GO' Button at Spring Hill is being mashed: Equinoxes are selling like Molten Hotcakes, and BOTH CAMI AND Oshawa can't Keep up!
