Help with codes and egr valve

I have a 93 silverado. It is a Mark 3 conversion my suggestion to all is if it dont come that way from the factory dont buy it. But that is another subject. It has a 350 and has been a good truck until late. Right now It is showing a code 32 and 38. What exactly would the EGR valve being bad affect? Today it started idling really rough and smelled extremely rich.

Code 32 is the generic EGR valve code. That would tell me to first check for a vacuum leak everywhere, and if one is found that may solve the problem; if no vacuum leak is found you should replace the EGR valve. EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation, and it is an emissions control component that will affect your vehicle's performance if it becomes plugged up (or if the solenoid is bad if yours is electric). A restricted EGR will affect airflow into the cylinder through the intake valves. Your nose picking up that rich smell could mean the engine is pulling in extra fuel/air mixture to compensate for the pressure difference.

Your 93 Silverado should not be throwing a code 38. There is no reference for code 38 on any '93 5.7L engine.
