2011 Silverado Spare not the same as the Factory Installed Tire

I have a 2011 Silverado 1500 HD with Bridgestone Dueler A/T P265/65R18 on it. I had a part of the tread rip off (Not Covered by the Crappy Bridgestone Warrantee By the Way). Anyway the spare was a Goodyear P265/65R17 !!!

The dealer said this is normal! Anyone else have this issue? It doesn't seem like Chevrolet would actually put a smaller diameter tire on as a spare and not even the same brand?

Yeah with certain wheel packages, it says that the spare doesnt match the rest of the wheels. So yes it is normal.

Welcome to the forum... I would think it should be the same overall diameter, but not necessarily the same size rim or same brand tire.

 

Ive never paid attention to what size the spare is though.

Are you sure the spare is a 65 series and not a 70, the 70 would be a closer match. I know my truck has 18's on it and a 17 for a spare but I didn't pay attention to the width/ratio

Spare should be a 265/70/17 I'm pretty sure. It's normal and it isn't significantly smaller (if at all) than your 18s overall.

There is info in the owners manual about the spare being different. My Tahoe has 20's but a 17" spare. The overall tire diameter of the 2 different size rims is identical so it will not hurt anything. A spare is a temporary solution to an issue it is not meant to be used for an extended period of time.

My spare is different but I didn't check out the details. I was glad to get a spare. Many vehicles no longer even have a spare and with the new CAFE requirements, I read the manufacturers are using that as an excuse to delete the spares in all vehicles in the near future.

If you ever put a spare on a car, it'd look like something ripped off a kid's little toy wagon. The car leans horribly on the tiny tire and handling's awful. 50 miles tops tread life, I think. Trucks really have nice spares by comparison.
