i know this is too common for older chevys my frame is cracking where the steering box bolts are nearer the tire.its just a hair line crack going down toward the bumper but gunna get worse.anybody have any pictures of the repair steps and what i should use at a low cost cause i never repaired a this before an will have to do it myself cause shops tooo much so any pics or vid's thx

not sure who made it but there use to be a kit that was pretty common for repairs and or preventetive precausions. two steel plates that sandwiched the fram inbetween, welding required. should be able to find it on the net or check with 4wheel parts wholesalers or one of the shops that advertise in the 4wheel mags.

Had a 84 GMC 3/4ton and the hole in the frame for the passenger side shock bolt was longated and cracked, used two large washers and welded one on either side of the frame and it work great.

anyone know the proper way to weld the kit in? should i weld the cracks grind the weld bead down then weld the plates on?

Prep the cracks by grinding them clean were you are going to lay down a bead, grind it down almost flush then put your plates on and weld them in.

Try grinding a groove where the crack is to get good penetration on your weld.

grind a little canyon like groove along the crack then weld it?
