20" wheels

My 2010 Sierra 1500 has the stock 17" chrome all terrain wheels with factory Bridgestone tires. I am interested in putting the polished OEM 20" wheels with nitto mud grapplers on when finances allow. I have herd that the 20s will result in decreased performance and fuel economy. Has anyone else hers of this or experience any issues? Any input / advice is appreciated.

20" wheels alone will not make a difference. The overall weight and rolling diameter of the tire/wheel package will. If you get a 20" tire that results with the same overall diameter of your 17" tires, the odometer will be correct and it will not decrease performance/mpg. If the 20" wheel and tire combo weigh more, than you will loose some performance/mpg.

 

Some people make blanket statements that larger rims automatically hurt performance/mpg but they dont. It depends on the factors I mentioned. You'd have to do some research on the weight to see what the difference will be.

 

Oh and like Chris said, some tires have more rolling resistance (ie more aggressive tread) and will also hurt the performance/mpg.

i went from a 265/75R16 which is a 32" tire on stock 16's to my 275/55R20's. diameter roughly the same. the 16's were an all terrain tire where as my 20's have highway tread. i gained an mpg or 2

Great info. Thanks Chris. So rolling resistance definitely helped and possible that 20" setup weighed a little less. No way to tell without weighing both. But it goes to show that 20" setup doesn't always hurt performance or mpg.

First week with factory 20s shows ~ 1-2 mpg more over the stock 17 setup. Goodyear Wrangler AT/S 265/70-17 vs Michelin LTX M/S2 275/55-20. 31.75" vs 32.25" measured wheel/tire diameter.

same here 20" rims on My 2000 Suburban actually gave Me 1-2 mpg.

Yes... Tread patterns make a huge diff. Losing about 2-3 mpg with the coopers than with the crappy stock Goodyear ls2

I have 20inch factory tires, Goodyears. I have a 5.3 ltr AFM engine and it would be hard to imagine any worse fuel economy. I get approx 15 in town and 17 if I nurse the truck along at 65 on the freeway. It is my opinion wheels and tires wont make much difference. Inflation may have something to do with it.

 

The sticker said it should get 21 on the highway, but I assume that was not for a 4 x 4 truck but rather a 2 x 4. Whatever the case, I hate the gas mileage.

You can go to 20's no problem without mods. You run a 275/55R20 with them. Any larger and a level is recommended
