the dealer around here charges 279 plus tax for a pan drop, filter, blah blah blah, service type thing. If I do it myself with valvoline dexron six full synthetic a wix filter ac delco gasket its only going to run me around 100 dollars besides i really enjoy working on my truck. Oh and by the way as far as screwing anything up goes, I turn wrenches on heavy duty machinery for a living, I only ask so many questions because these gasoline engines are kittens that always need to be purring right, dont really know to much about them but im learning there"s alot of good advice and tips on this forum. Never serviced my own gasser until now a little diferent know what i mean besides ima service my tranny once a year and im not paying no 279 every time.

Well i did it, filter, gasket, and fluid change on my tranny, I made a mess, I took my time. I have a 2wd 2011 sierra and there was no need to move the heat shield, loosen the tranny mount (tailshaft mount), only thing i did have to remove was the shifting cable and not completely only from the back (torx head screws). I serviced my tranny at about 14000 miles and thank god i did there was a good amount of sludge all ready building up on the magnets they were black! From here on out im gonna service my tranny every 15000 miles its not to expensive.

yea I know, alot of the fluid ended up on the floor the catch pan was just in my way, I used alot of dry sweep to soak up my mess.

15k miles for a service interval is nonsense ,,sorry

what does your owners manual say for the interval ?

its late and i cant convert to Kms ,its 80k KM interval for us metric folk ,,,dont over due something for the sake of preventitive maint ,alittle on the magnet is normal jim

How are you gonna come on here and call anything nonsense, I can afford and it's easy, 15k is about once a year, I suppose your gonna tell me that flushing it with a machine is okay because the dealer does it.

Different strokes for different folks

15K is a little overkill unless you're towing the shit out of everything. Your next pan drop will be much cleaner. What you saw was simply the transmission break-in wear material. We randomly test our vehicles to see how they are progressing and to hopefully catch any problems before they get too far along. Engines and transmissions get tested. These vehicles are towing something most of the time. Our interval is about 40k with no problems. We have larger than OEM, aftermarket coolers. Treated properly the 4L60E can last a good while.

How often do you change engine oil? 3k/ 3 months?

BTW. govetech4 (Rob) has been wrenching on GM transmissions longer than you or I have been wrenching on them. He may be blunt, but he knows transmissions.

80k KM is about 50k miles

Good to know, thanks for the enlightenment, when I'm wrong I'm wrong, at least I got the factory fill out, 40k to 50k sounds more reasonable my apologies guys, rob thanks for your advice, txab, tanked Darren, yours too it really helped me out. As a matter of fact all you have been wrenching on gm trannies longer than I have, and your input and advice is much appreciatted, I hate to admit when I'm wrong, so please keep them comments coming your knowledge is good stuff!

And yes I do change my oil every 3k, but believe me I need it, last time I had about 3278 miles to the oil and the Olm was at 34%, I barely have 807 miles on my knew oil and it's already at 84%, so 3000/3500 is about right for me not much towng but ALOT of stop and go traffic not very many high way miles, would that fall under severe service? That is where my confusion with the service interval on the tranny comes from.

It's not about being right or wrong. It's about gaining info/knowledge so you can make decisions about your maintenance. Transmission fluid doesn't have contaminants to deal with like engine oil does, that's why it can go longer intervals. IIRC you added a cooler recently, that will help your transmission. If someone were to do it once per year, 13k change, a fluid change of just the pan is all I'd do. No need for a new screen/filter at that interval. That's when a pan with a drain plug is nice. :) After few of those sequences, it would be time for a screen/filter change

Yes your driving habits would fall under severe service. Have you serviced your diff(s) yet? If not, now is the time for it. You might look into finding yourself a set of service manuals for your truck. Those will help you when working on your truck. It's your truck, you service it when ever you feel like it.....whatever makes you sleep comfortably at night.

P.S. Did you do just a pan drop or pan drop/ total fluid exchange this time?

Yes I'm about service my diff as well I just bought a gasket for the diff cover from the dealer, I'm looking to put some of that royal purple stuff in my diff, I would love to have a service manual for my truck but damn, there expensive, and no I didn't do a full exchange only what ever a pan drop consists of.
