Adding gauge 05 1500

Hey everyone. Im adding a external mechanical gauge to my truck since the one in the gauge cluster is acting up. When i add the gauge, and remove the dash one, will the DIC freak out on me for low oil pressure? Also, what NPT fitting would i need? I have a 5.3l.

Thanks a bunch for the help, much appreciated.

Did you troubleshoot to determine if it is the gauge or the sending unit? Also if it is the gauge why not fix it right instead of a rig job?

agreed.. Have your cluster rebuilt or buy a rebuilt one and you can send your faulty one back as a core deposit..

I'd rather just add a high quality mechanical gauge, as its known for the ones in the gauge cluster to be inaccurate.

To each his own I guess. But you still didn't answer if you actually know which part is bad?? The cluster is plenty accurate for regular use. Unless you plan on racing it I don't see why you want to go thru all the extra BS?

Currently unsure which is bad, havent had any issues with my gauge cluster until now. i figure if im spending the $40 for the sending unit which may not even be the problem, just spend the little extra and add a nice oil pressure gauge. Is there anything i can T into for a pickup?

  • I'm not sure where you can find an oil line to T into. That also creates a potential oil leak. I still recommend checking the sending unit first. Are you thinking of mounting the new gauge in the cluster?

DIC will react on what the factory sending unit says. Information from the sending unit is processed by the PCM then forwarded to the cluster through a data link. Therefore removing the factory oil pressure sensor would trigger problems with no question.

If it's reading erratically it's likely to be the sending unit, if it's acting lazy then it's likely to be the stepper motor in the cluster.
