GM 3WD

Is GM the only manufacture to put 3wd on their vehicles rather than a true 4wd?  Not having a front locker has gotten me in trouble on more than one occasion.  Aside from Hummer, what other stock true 4wds are out there?

I don't think anyone puts a locker on the front. It would make it dang near impossible to turn.

I've seen some off roaders put air lockers in the front for bad situations, but they have to unlock them for most of the time.

I agree you couldn't turn it!

If you need a locker in the front then you should get a Hummer. I would never put my truck in situation that needed a front locker.

Well for an truck with an off road package (99 Silverado Z71) it sure gets stuck alot.  Ive got this thing stuck 3 times now, no not off roading, all in my own yard.  CHristmas morning got it stuck in 8 in of snow and had to use both my 3WD tahoe and 3WD blazer to pull it out.  I dont mean a full time locker just one like the one on the rear.  Im going to buy Eaton E lockers for both ends soon

You got stuck in 8in of snow?  Did you have it in 4wd?

I have had my truck in 2 feet of snow with no problems getting stuck

My brother has a 69' Toyota Land Cruiser that has front and rear locking diffs. We use it for hunting at his lease at it will really go through some bad stuff. I would never take any pickup down some of the paths that that thing has seen.

I don't know if that they still make them? ???

When I am in 4wd mine is only a 2wd (open front and rear) and I havent had any problems YET! (Knock on wood)! :jester:

That's the same case as the vast majority of Jeeps made as well.

No locker or even limited slip in either differential.

Chevy offers the g80 locker in the rear dif, F**D doesn't even offer a locker!  If you got stuck in 8 in. of snow in a Z71 it sounds like a tire problem!!  :jester:

My tires suck, ill be getting some 285's soon.  It wasnt just 8 in of snow, it was in my yard so it was muddy too.  The truck was on an incline so whenever i tryed to accelerate, the rear locked and slid further down the hill into a tree.  Yes it was in 4LO

I dont guess I have ever used 4LO in any situations, in any vehicle, except to just be messin around. Maybe I havent been in the conditions to use it, but snow and mud in yards is definately not enough for me to qualify for 4LO operation. Sounds like a tire problem, I have actually seen brand new tires do very poorly in situations, much less wore ones.

My truck with the crappy F***stones made it through 8 inches of snow, no problem.  I can't imagine what a good set of rubber would do for better traction in the white stuff. :jester:

mine has firestone as well (245's)  It has no trouble getting through 8 inches of snow on the ground but I was on an incline in the mud/ice/snow.  I just used 4LO because 4HI wasnt getting me anywhere so I switched

This past snowstorm we had xmas eve i ran auto 4wd down the highway.  Going to midnight mass i ran 4wd hi.  Truck made it fine but going home i ran it in auto 4wd and it felt like it made it through the snow much better in 4 wheel auto than in 4 wheel hi.
