Oil consumption help...

I've spent the better part of this morning searching forums trying to ascertain information for this oil consumption problem and so far haven't been able to find anything that's answered my question. This is the AFM Flex-Fuel 5.3, of course.

 

My truck is an LMG equipped 2WD Silverado, built in the US at Fort Wayne, with 8,100 miles. I have a friend who has a 4WD LC9 equipped Sierra, built in Mexico, with 21,000 miles. He recently discovered that his truck is starting to use oil. With that said, here's what I'm interested in finding out...

 

From what I've seen, LC9's are 4WD-only engines, but LMG's can be found in both driveline configurations. I've also observed that most postings about this issue have been mostly isolated to 4WD trucks, but there's no solid evidence I've found so far to prove this theory. Maybe it only affect 4WD trucks, or maybe just the people that are posting about the problem happen to own a 4WD. I'd be interested to see the statistics on this particular question. So what say you, LMG or LC9 in your truck? What's been your experience with them concerning oil consumption? Any 2WD folks having the problem too?

Just so I don't look like an idiot to anyone, I did read through the entire thread while I was researching this morning. There was too much inconclusive data within it to really answer what I'm looking for. I've looked at other forums and have googled the crap out of this problem and haven't found anything worthwhile to help me. It kinda sucks, but oh well. I'll keep looking.

The engines I believe are all built in one plant. Romulous NY comes to mind but I could be off base.

I think they're built in St. Catharines, Ontario also from what I saw on Wiki. Don't know about the Silao claim; I can't find anything to back it up. Doesn't really matter I don't guess, I was just wanting to know because it peaks my curiosity. 8100 miles on mine; 4000 on the current oil change and it's halfway between the 3rd and 4th dots so I think, for now anyway, I'm OK. :) Hopefully it stays that way but I'm still thinking about getting AFM turned off... there is a guy in my area that is LLC'ed to do tunes for GMs and not void the warranty.

Actually I lied about that. Word of mouth vs talking one on one teaches you things! Turns out what he does CAN void the warranty, but only if GM wants to. So far, the few folks that have had something go wrong while their truck was tuned did not get denied a warranty claim. With that said, I'm doing it. Getting rid of AFM, torque management, and a few other things. Never thought I'd do a tune but it is hard to resist now.

Romulus is in Michigan.

 

Its says right on the lower right hand corner of the window sticker what country the engine was made in.

 

According to GM Powertrain website

LC9 & LMG built in Romulus Mi and St. Catherines, Ontario. Nothing about Mexico

 

L9H, LZ1, L94 in Romulus Michigan and Silao Mexico

 

L96, LC8 built at all 3 locations

Maybe more people own 4wd so you hear about them more. IDK? I have 4wd and almost 10k miles and it doesn't burn/loose oil and it's the 5.3 with AFM. You tell me how to tell if I have a LMG or LC9 and I'll post it up.

Look for the RPO in the glovebox :)

 

I have the LC9 on my 11 Crew 4x4. Almost 16K on the clock....knock on wood no problem with consumption yet.

LC9 & L9H (6.2L) are aluminum blocks with alumimnum heads

LMG is cast iron block with aluminum heads

 

The LC9 is lighter in weight which means better fuel economy for the vehicle is used in.

OK, checked the glove box for my RPO code and I got the LC9, 2010 4x4 5.3 with AFM. Again, all good here and knocking on wood like greywolf11.

Just drive it and not worry. I traded off (moved up to a Denali) my 2010 Sierra LC9 with 30,000+ miles on it and it never so much as used a drop of oil. Just make sure to use high quality synthetic oil.

 

I seen a piston (only 1 was bad) that came from on of these oil burning engines ('07 GMC CC) and the rings were cooked right onto the piston, it looked one piece. The service manager (know him well) said the owner changed his oil every 3,000 miles at the local quick lube.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
