Odd Noise When In 4x4

Hi Everyone:

I am new to the world of trucks and 4x4.  In June I bought a 2002 Silverado 1500 LB, 4x4 6 cylinder regular cab (work truck) with the automatic tranmission.  My truck has the four wheel drive lever on the floor.  During the summer, I hadn't used the 4x4, but with more than two feet of snow since Christmas, I have been using the 4x4 quite a bit.  I noticed today that when the 4x4 in engaged that there is a growning noise from the front whenever I turn to the left.  Is this typical?  As I said, I am a newbie truck guy.  I have called the local dealer and have an apointment for Wednesday, but was wondering if anyone might have an idea of what could be causing my truck to grown.  Thanks a a million!

When you are in 4WD Hi or Lo, it is a solid connection between front and rear axles.  In heavy snow or on ice you should not hear much if any "working' noises between the axles.  If you are turning in any type of dry surface, including gravel, there will be some grunting and groaning. You should never be in 4WD on dry pavement or you will hear some noises that obviously are very bad.

My 02 Base Silverado with the lever in the floor makes a low growl when in 4x4. Pretty much every 4x4 I have had is a little louder in 4x4. It seems like the older they are the louder they were, it is hardlyt noticeable in my 02 but definatly a different sound.

As the others have noted, on my 99, I get a noticeable difference in sound in 4wd vs. 2wheel.  You will get a binding sensation when making low speed turns in 4wd as well.  There could be some noise there too.
