valve stuck in guide

has anyone heard of this taking place? I have a 06 sierra with the 5.3 started to clang pretty bad. went to the local motor guru he pulled heads and told me the valve stuck fast to the guide and the lifter blew apart sending chunks of metal throughout thwarting engine is this a reported issue or is it just my luck? only had around 88k one truck... and there was not much carbon on the cylinders if any at all on most.
