Axle width

Anybody know how much wider the newer 14 bolt heavy duty 6 lug 1/2 axles are in comparison to my current '72 12 bolt?  I'm thinking of doing a swap for a stronger axle, but don't want to do a 9"(Ford!?!?) or a real heavy 14 bolt 1-ton or D60.

Good question.  I am also thinking of doing that with my 1979 Truck.  I want to upgrade as well to disk brakes, so its interesting to know if the two axles can be swapped straight across with little or no modifications. I noticed last week that in my local classifieds, there was an add for a GM 12 bolt off of a 1993 1/2 ton with disk brakes and a semi-float axle for $350.00.  I almost purchased it, but I was not sure if it was the same length. Too bad, cause thats dirt cheap.
