Subwoofer cubic ft needed. Professional opinion needed.

So the box I have in my truck now allows my speaker 1.56cf and the vent is tuned to 42hz. When I drew out a blue print, I didn't account for the loss in cubic feet due to the boards themselves. My speaker calls for ported box to be 1.79cf and 36-40hz. I can get a box from a buddy for cheap that is 1.86cf and tuned to 36hz. Will the speaker work better with the bigger box or should I just stay with what I have.

So you already built your box? If you did and you did not allow for wood OR allow for the air displacement of the speaker itself, then your size is probably WAY off.

Ar you running the speaker in a 1.56 or you built it to 1.56 and it is really less??? A box is not simply a box. How well is his built? What size driver, etc... Is it 1.86 but uses thinner wood?

The 1.86 box, once you subtract for the actuall speaker for itself, often .04 or so, will put you really close to what you need. You can always glue in additional supports that will also take up space and get you to the needed size. But generally you are better off being to big than too small. You should tune the port based on several factors. The frequency response of the driver. Bytuning to a frequency where the driver performs poorly you can boost the frequency of the system using the port to help create a flatter response curve. This depends on the box, the driver, and also the vehicle. Your vehicle has a natural resonating frequency, as does everything in it. If you are looking for sound qualtity you may want to tune around the frequency of the truck so that you can enhance frequencies that your truck does not resonate well. If you just want loud, you tune the box to also match the frequency of your truck so that you box is loudest where your truck is also loudest.

If you budies box is already built. install it, and try it out. You won't know for sure till you try it.

How does your sound. Have you loaded with polyfil to create a "fake" volume. Polyfil will make a box perform like it actually has a larger volume than it does.
