That's why whenever I winch someone or someone pulls me out (which is very rare) I always put up the hood of my truck for extra peace of mind

never heard of a ball snapping those things are meant to pull trailers i dont see that ever happening unless someone made their own hitch with bad welds lol, get a heavy strap with loops and throw it over the hitch ball i do it all the time

I have always been told not to use a ball mount with a tow strap on it for fear that it could break. I just pin it in my receiver.

Here is a picture of a clevis I rigged up. It can be put in hitch vertically or horizontally. Works great for straps with loops on the end and you don't have to worry about it comming unhooked.

That set up is way stronger than using the ball. Some balls are only rated for 5000lbs some people forget that. Your rigging is only as strong as the weakest link.

Not to mention balls are meant to be used with a steady pull. Not a jerking motion.

I'm due for a warning, but I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole...

I've pulled out more people with my ball in the receiver hitch than most people have dreamed of. Just don't be an idiot and jerk the strap. Go forward slowly until the strap is tight, then give it some power. If you pop the strap to try and get someone out you're far more likely to break something, ball hitch or not.

Just putting a strap over the ball is dangerous. I watched one sail through a back window after it sheared off at the shank. Granted....there were morons and beer involved....but it happened. Pinning a strap into the reciever or using a clevis is much better. A broken strap has a lot less chance of taking your head off than a broken ball or hook.
