OD not shifting when Cold.

I have a 2002 Chevy 2500HD and this is the first winter I am driving it.  When the tranny is cold it and I take it on the highway it doesn't shift into od. When the trany temp comes up to 100 110 it shifts fine.  My question is is this normal?  The owners manual says that the shift patern changes when the out side temp is less then 30 deg. wnd will change until the truck warms up.  The truck is up to temp well before the tranny gets to temp.   Any info would be great. ???

its normal.  Its stated in the manual.  Mine has done it for 3 winters now

Its done to let the tranny warm up to cause less damage

It's totally normal.  Go to www.allisontransmission.com and there's an FAQ on the Ally 1000.  If memory serves, it doesn't use first gear or OD if the tranny fluid temp is under 30 degrees F.  It's supposed to make the tranny fluid warm up faster.
