Can you push caliper piston too far back in??

There is some way to reset that ABS unit. The guy at the parts house was telling me how to do it but I didnt pay much attention, something about pumping the pedal 20 times with the truck off? Might be worth looking into.

I have exactly the same problem with my 07 Siera 1500 as Jerry Noble describes above.

I have tried for over an hour to bleed the air out but the air bubbles are constant and not just tiny bubbles but big ones.

Ive tried a gravity bleed as well for over an hour with no luck either.

I just cant think of where all this air is coming from.

 

Could I have gunk stuck under a MC cup thats allowing air into the system each time the brake is pushed?

Maybe the gunk could have got there when I pushed the pistons back?

 

I was thinking next of bleeding the MC for the front wheels as I think the problem is still localised there.

Alternatively I was thinking of a bench bleed until I saw Jerry Noble's mention of just doing a pressure bleed to sort it out.

Jerry, do you think this would work for me?

Also when you say pressure bleed do you mean bleed from mc down or caliper up?

Good Question.....

 

I guess Ive experienced too too many huge quotes including unnecessary parts from Garages for work that I then completed myself correctly at a fraction of the cost, after abit of research.

 

I also like to think that because its my vehicle and life at stake that I will be more careful to do it right than maybe a young mechanic doing the job as quick as he can to keep in favor with his boss.

Well, replaced the MC and now all is good.

 

Glad you got it fixed! I have seen this happen quite a few times actually. By not opening the bleeder valve on the caliper, you put excessive pressure on the seals inside the master cylinder and trashed it. This also happens alot during brake jobs, when guys use the old way technique for pushing pistons back in. Opening the MC cap and pushing old brake fluid upstream is bad news for the ONE way seals inside the MC. Pushing the piston back the old way frequently results in a mushy brake pedal but I have also seen the master cylinder leak and fail completely.

 

When pushing pistons back in, leave the MC Cap on, crack the bleeder valve and then push the pistons back in slowly and consistently until they stop firmly. Do not force the piston back as hard as you can, firm pressure is all you need. Close the bleeder when the piston stops and you will have no problems. The best news about this technique is that besides not pushing the brake fluid in a direction it was never designed to travel, you also remove the hardest worked fluid in the whole system, the fluid at the caliper and brake line.

 

I usually suck the old brake fluid out of the MC reservoir before I do this and then bleed the brakes a few times after the pads are on, just for good measure. I have never had any problems or a spongy pedal, even when using cheap pads and rotors.

I just put new front rotors & pads on a 2000 1500. I had to retract the pistons on mine pretty good but didn't have to bleed anything, All I did was take the cap off the master cylinder while compressing. No problems.

    • This is NOT impact damage nor neglect. There were previous class action lawsuits because of such paint preparation st GM manufacturing plant. Not just the Cherry Red Color. This paint is applied in three processes to obtain the desired color.  The manufacturer will cover for 36 months or 36k miles only. That rust is actually corrosion because of the paint process failure. Corrosion is covered for 100,100 miles or a certain months. However their corrosion doesn't include this type. Go figure. Clearly manufacturer knew from previous paint issues. This started 3 weeks ago out of the blue.  
    • Is it time to put a piece of tape over the CEL? 
    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
