Transfer case shift motor

I believe the transfer case shift motor is not functioning properly. When I push 4hi on the dash (while slightly rolling) the lights blink for a lil bit, then you can hear the motor go off. After that I know that the 4WD is not working, only the rear tires will spin.

 

When I do this same thing while the truck is on jackstands, I can get the front wheels to slightly spin, almost as if it is somewhat engaged, but not all the way. And when you give it some gas, the rear wheels defintely spin more than the front. When I take the truck out of 4hi, you can hear a slight "clunk" and then only the rear wheels will spin.

 

Has anyone had similar issues? If so, what was the fix for this? Are there some tricks to fix the shift motor, or does it need to be completely replaced? Or am I possibly looking at something more severe?
