08 gmc sierra tailgate wont open

my 08 gmc sierra tailgate will not open i know on the older body styles the plastic bracket for the rod would break but on the new body styles I dont see any rods and i cant figure out how to take off the plastic bracket around the handle please help!

Remove the three bolts on the inside of the bed behind the handle.

There are 2 different plastic clips that help hold the latch end rods to the handle mechanism.
