Finally broke down and bought a Jimmy.  Little older, worse shape than I wanted but the price was rite!  I even overheard the wife telling the neighbor that she really likes it (darn, should have gotten a stick).  So I must have done something rite.  91 Jimmy 2 Dr, SLE, Auto, AC, 4x4, blue in color.  Pretty much loaded with pwr options, but nothing works correctly.  Truck needs a lot of work, but nothin' that can't be done.  134K on the odometer, don't really know if its the original engine.  4.3 Liter throttlebody injection.  Rated @ 160 hp, don't really think I'm getting that now, hard to tell.  Engine is very loud, though.  Transmission has some get up, and shifts good.  so I'll say thats been replaced.  It's the 700R4.

Got some rust here & there, but nothing that can't be dealt with.  Truck's been painted & had some body work, but who ever did it did a fine job.

But overall, I'm excited.  It's pretty much what I wanted, a truck to play with.  No shortage of things to do, just a shortage of cash lol.  I'll get pics up soon, just have to figure out how.

Takin it to my dealer Friday to get front suspension looked at.  I was told it needed ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm and some other things when I bought it.  I want to do as much as I can on the truck, but that sort of stuff is a little out of my league, especially since I don't have a rack for the FEA.  I need to get that stuff done 1st, especially since I'll be hauling my kids around in it too.  I didn't want to take it to my dealer with the $65/hr labor rate, but it seems all the other places are around that rate too.

Sorry about the rant, more later.

Pete most of them are the same and havent changed so you can check those.  Older ones that have been discontinued wont be there.  Case in point the Z71 RPO has been around since 89 i believe.

I am not trying to start anything first fo all, but why do you assume that the Trans. has been replaced/rebuilt? My bros Has ~135k on his 89' S10 Blazer 4x4, the tranny, engine, basically everything except the front suspension(4x4) is still in excellent condition. Mine which is a 94' S15 Jimmy 4x4 has ~127k miles and everything- except the pesky EGR valve keeps clogging up- is working great. You won't have to worry about the EGR though, yours is Vacuum, where mine is the electronic, where for some reason the early electonic ones were a pain the ass for alot of owners. Anyway, if you have any questions, besides the RPO codes- for which I have absolutely no clue, feel free to contact me. OH and by the way, add a flowmaster to the jimmy, don't put the tip(s) on if you off road, just have the wleder put the pipe in the stock position, anyway, it made one helluva an improvement on my bros. s10 with the TBI, I am waiting for my b-day for mine

Kool, Lumberjack, thats good news 4 me concerning the tranny.  I hope you're rite.  Tranny does shift good, no hesitation/slipping so thats 1 less thing to worry about.

Do have a few q's 4 you though;  What is that "horrible" whinning coming from the engine?  Kind of sounds like a humming sound that gets louder everytime I hit the gas.  Is that normal?  2)  A big one here - gas milage - what are some relatively inexpensive things to do to increase milage.  And I mean things "other than" keep your foot out of the throttle body.  I just had my 1st fill up today and the milage is horrible.  I get better mpg in my Sierra with the 5.3!!!  Strolled into the station today, sputtering from an empty tank (I was very fortunate that I was so close, esp with my 2 kids in the truck).  Filled it up to 19.6 gallons, cked the trip odometer and put on 262.4 miles.  Thats 13.3 mpg, and thats got to increase! especially since I'll be on the rode a lot.  Rite now I'm getting 14 mpg with the Sierra - around town.

3)  These r "ballpark" q's.  How much is a serpintine belt & tensioner?  Rear axle sear & bearing plus labor?  Oil pressure sensor?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all let me tell you that I am sorry for not responding sooner, I rarely look in on this forum just because it moves so slow, but today I happend to look in and noticed that you responded, so here we go:

Concerning the whining, I am not quite sure what you are refering to, as in exactly what it is, but I know mine has a sound coming from the engine that couold be considered a whine, but I think it has to do with the intake somehow, on my brothers' wich is more like yours, he has a certain degree of a whine that I think might be what you are refering to because it does get louder the more gas that you give it, but on almost every TBI gm s-series I have seen/heard made the same sound my bros. does, but I am not sure what it is, maybe it is the typ of intake/injection that the TBI's have.

Geeze, 13 mpg?! Well the first thing that I do when I buy a vehicle is service evertything, give it a complete tuneup, plugs, wires, fuel filter, tranny service, oil change, basically everyhting that needs to be replaced on a regular basis. Second of all, make sure that the air filter is clean, I know that when m y bro put a KNN filter on his it increased his MPG by I think one or two mpg. The flowmaster increased the mpg by I think 2 or 3, and a new cat would almost definately help. I know the KNN will run about $30, the flowmaster would probably run about $300 (just a catback system with the muffler), and a new cat would run about $70-90 for ujust the cat.

Are you going to replace any of the stuff by yourself? The belt itself is maybe $5 I think, the tensioner I imagine would run about $20-30(ball park), those are just for the parts, I am not sure about the rest of the stuff, becaus eI haven't had to do it yet, and I do everything myself. Good luck, if you need any more help in the future, either post or private messenge me, I would be glad to help.
