Craftsman 155 piece. It has gotten me through a lot.

That will be just fine to keep in your truck. I was diehard craftsman for many years but now with them being Foreign made, they offer no advantage for their higher price other than the easier return ability (you'll have to decide if it's worth it or not, Personally I have never had an issue dropping a tool in the mail)

The ratchets are mediocre. As long as you are using them for light projects like swapping alternators and waterpumps like you listed you won't be dissappointed. I'd check to see which sockets are 1/4 drive and which are 3/8 drive. You'd be surprised on some of the sets where the 13mm is a 1/4 drive and you have to use the adapter.

Imported from the UAE?

I've no problem with that, but I would have more expected China, Taiwan...

I think it would be a good starting point. Most of my collection is electrical stuff now, whenever I need a tool I don't have, it gets added.

:M16: More "imported junk!" For the money you can't beat Craftsman! You have to look at each tool, many are still made in the USA! Look for "Craftsman" not Sears! :flag:

Considering of how often you'll change an alternator or a waterpump in the lifespan of your truck you should be fine with the tool kit.

IMO one shouldn't cheap out on tools.

It doesn't have to be Snap-On but Mastercraft is what I use ever since.

Never had a broken ratchet or a socket split open. Even though I used the tools hardcore on my rusty '77 J10.

so long

Don't guess you noticed, more and more of Craftsman tools are being manufactured overseas now. You can still find USA tools at Sears until they sell out of older stock

:M16: As a matter of fact, I have noticed! Much like GM. Many are still made in the USA! You have to look at each tool and always look at Craftsman, not Sears! Their "Professional" hand -tools that I have looked at all say USA! :flag:

This one says imported from china :( always thought all craftsman was USA made.

Theres a sweet kobalt tool set for 100 its a 227 piece set i believe

:M16: The very next one # 37154 is made in USA! Like I said, you have to look. All the Kobalts I have seen at Lowes are "imported!" Like Wal-Mart, Lowes is a huge China importer! I look at everything I buy. Even my Denali, sadly from Mehico. :flag:

You can get a Craftsman 165-PC Mechanics Tool Set at K-Mart for $89.99 this week on sale. On sale at Sears this same set is $99.99 this week. Has almost the same pieces as the Crescent tool kit. And of course it is made in China.
