Firearm question

I am thinking about buying an SKS. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations?

I know my father has two of them. I'm pretty sure they are "Russian" models...or that might be his AK 47 ??? I'll have to ask him this weekend. He knows alot about assualt rifles so I'll get the low-down for ya.

They are cheaply made and not very accurate. However, they are very reliable and cheap to buy. If you want a nice gun you can appreciate and pass down to your children, look elsewhere. If you want something to bang around and plink with it is a good choice. I have shot many but don't own one...it is fun to plink around with one but I want to have something that I can actually hit with. I do know people that deer hunt with them, though.

If this will be a "first gun" for you I would suggest getting something else. If you are already used to shooting and just want a SKS just to have one or you want something that will bang around in your truck toolbox then it will be fine.

The balistics are the same as a 30-30. I had several that were of average accuracy. Not poor, not great, just decent. Very sturdy rifle, would make a fine truck gun. Alot of accessories are available, but very few are worth the money. If you like pistol grip rifles get a new stock other than that I would use a 20 or 30 round clip and get better sights. Thats all enjoy.

I would personaly buy a AR-15 I think they are a better gun for plinking, acuracy.

However if you want something that will take a beating and keep on ticking......... Go with the AK47. They can take more dirt grind and grit and still fire. Also less parts to them but harder to take down........

I love my AK. Make sure get a milled receiver, and not a stamped one.

I have a few firearms. I have been shooting since I was 8.

I currently shoot a 7mm mag Ruger M77.

A friend of mine approached me this morning with the info that a friend of his was "reducing his collection". He said that the only gun the guy had that he thought I might want was an SKS.

He said it is in very good shape w/ a folding stock, 10 rd clip and a 30 rd clip.

I have been pineing away for a Bushmaster for about a month now, but can't afford it just yet. I could get the SKS for $250.

Its all according to what you want to use it for. Hunting? Distance shooting or brush busting? Its hard to recommend a gun when we dont know its use.

Usage:

Mainly, just to have. Some plinking, some "home defense", maybe some deer hunting.

I have found that $250 is about what a dealer at a gun sale would offer for it. So, it isn't a money maker.

If the SKS is a Norinco you may want to forget about it.

A good friend of mine is big in to the SKS rifles and tells me to avoid them at all costs due to the fact that they use a stamped reciever and they have problems with that set up.

You can look online at sites like gunbroker.com and pick up Russians and Yugoslavian rifles cheaper than that and they are in fairly good shape so it's not a great price to begin with.

Well, if you are not getting a steal on it I wouldn't worry about it. That price is a little high, IMO. Just think, you could buy a Ruger 10/22 and a nice scope for that price, or a Remington 870 Express, or a Taurus 85 revolver, or a Ruger Mk II .22 Pistol or a....

I have come to realize that it is better to have 1 good gun than 3 cheap ones. There is nothing more irritating than a cheap gun.

If I were you, I'd put that $250 away and save for the AR....

I've read a good article on the net regarding the SKS. The guy who wrote it says for a cheap gun it's really great. They will take a LOT of abuse and still come out shootin. Plus ammo (7.69x32) is dirt cheap. Pick one up and 1000 rounds and keep for when the day comes.

I agree with the guys who say save your money and buy quality. I don't have any assualt rifles because I live in California where they have outlawed most of the guns I would want to own if I could.

I do own a Glock 21 and the wife has a Glock 19 I love my Winchester Model 94 and the 12 gage Defender. Quality arms wont let you down when you need them.
