2003 Silverado 2500hd, ABS/parking brake light stays on

On my 2003 Silverado 2500hd, the ABS and parking brake light comes on and stays on. I have not checked the fluid yet but have a feeling it is more complicated than that. I will check it tomorrow. Besides the fluid, what other things should I check? Could the cold weather have any thing to do with it? It has been pretty cold here for several days, been having sub zero lows and highs in the teens.

 

I have not noticed a difference in braking, everything seems to be working fine. Have not tested the ABS system.

Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this. That light can come on for a variety of reasons, as simple as the fluid is just low, to there is a pressure loss (leak) in the system. It also comes on for a brake system electrical component failure, which could be the ABS computer or a wheel hub sensor.

 

I agree with govtech4, you need to pull the codes they will tell you something, especially if the obvious things (fluid low, or leak) are not apparent. And yes if the ABS light is on the ABS system does not function.

I checked the brake fluid and it is full. When I started the truck again, the lights did not stay on. Could extreme cold weather affect the braking system and cause the lights to come on?

 

How would I go about checking the codes? Would a place like Autozone be able to do that?

Autozone can IF their reader is capable of reading ABS codes. ABS lights will may come on one time but not the next. Maybe a start or two later they will illuminate again. get the codes read so you know where the problem most likely is. It could be the ABS unit or wheel speed sensors, hub bearings etc...

Cold weather can definitely highlight an electrical problem, but its a problem nevertheless.

 

Based on what you said txab is right about which parts it could be. Now as for AutoZone being able to pull ABS codes, I think they use a standard hand held code reader that probably will not give you what you need. You likely need a Tech 2 or something more advanced. Its worth a try but don't get your hopes up.

Might want to make a good check of the wiring. Last winter I had a field mouse chew on my main wire harness and it caused all types of weird codes/ABS light/Traction control etc. The truck ran but very rough idle. Made me wanna cry as the truck only had 1500 miles on it at the time. The shop that fixed it recommended to leave the engine cover off so that it doesn't provide "cover" for a mouse. So far so good this winter...Knock on wood!!

 

Probably not your issue but worth a look. Good luck getting it figured out.

My 06 has been doing it on and off this winter and last winter.. water can freeze on the wheel speed sensor and cause it to throw the abs light on just wait it out and once it warms up you should be fine. Mine finally stopped doing it a week ago When I wasn't parked in deep snow anymore.. If you want peace of mind go get it scanned but I don't recommend replacing it as winter will just continue to cause them to act up.

Does anyone have an issue like this or heard of this?

I take my keys out truck off

and the high beam (blue) indicator light is illuminated and so is the(red) (padlock) Doorlock indicator

light on gauge cluster. not bright just faintly illuminated, but enough to kill battery after 3 weeks parked.

I have had my dash in for recall, worked great till I parked after hunting/camping/towing season

theses 2 indicator lights drained my red top optima. Now this issue has arised in gauge cluster

I have checked the BCM under column unplug 1 at a time to see if they go out still on. im thinking its the ECM under battery tray because im having a low idle issue.

 

I am a marine tech/mech working on mercury/mercruiser Sea-Ray, Boston Whaler Boats

Sea-Ray uses gm modified for marine engines only. form 3.0L 4cyl to 496-502 V-8 blocks

 

of coarse the boats don't have theses gauge cluster or BCMs under steering column

But they do have the ECMs but are mercuiser modified and controlled

just kinda stumped on this issue
