Tire pressure

Agree with the pressures here. Unless one is loaded up, running something in the 35 psi range is best. Along with higher pressures wearing out tires sooner, there is the added abuse to the suspension systems. It is one thing to have 60 psi in the tires with a serious load in the box, it is quite another to have that much pressure in the tires and running empty. It has been shown in commercial fleets, that running extended periods with overinflated tires wears out bushings and and other components. There have even been instances of stress cracks in some components. Tires are not only for load hauling, but they take a lot of shock out of the road. And also, if they are not inflated properly for the load, you can also end up sacrificing handling and stopping power. An overinflated tire will not handle or enable you to stop as quickly as a properly inflated tire.

Adjust your tire pressures based on what you are doing. I really wish the auto and pickup tire folks would publish load/psi charts on their pickup tires like they do their commercial heavy tires. Would make life a lot simpler. For instance, on the wide based 445/50R22.5 tires on my semi, even with 32,000 lb on a drive axle set (16,000 per axle), the recommended tire pressure is 95 psi, even though the tires are rated for 120 psi on the sidewall. You have to use a little common sense in how you set your pressures, no matter the vehicle. You just about have to be maxed out on GCVW before even considering going to anywhere close to max tire pressures.

You really think a quarter of a psi makes a difference? These are trucks, not F1 cars.

This was an (apparently failed) attempt at humor on my part. I thought the half-pound increment was a little over the top!
