Guys/gals, I have done a good amount of large scale (horrible) rust replacement jobs and I have always used Permatex Rust Treatment.

I just bought a 2011 GMC 2500 and living in Iowa, I want to protect as much as I can with all the salt they throw up here. (im used to missouri!)

I was going to wire brush/clean/scrape the frame and fender wells, pretty much anything not the color of the truck, then prep it and paint it with POR-15 semi-gloss black using clean, prep, and paint kit.

Anyone have any experience doing this? I have heard good things, read a lot of reviews and watched a lot of videos.

eBay has a gallon kit of the cleaner, prep, and paint for like $160 which was the best price I could find.

So does anyone have expereince? A review?

Also, is there anything to worry about when using the cleaner and prep? I'm sure its an acid based something due to the PPE you need to wear with it; would it be hard on brake lines or electrical? (obviously trying not to get too much on them)

Thanks for any thoughts.

Well I can google! I was hoping to hear some personal experiences with it. However, thanks for the efforts !

Did you bother to read the links to threads on this site? There are several threads from this site that mention using the product.

Plenty of reviews in both links of people who have used the product and how they used it.

But if you'd prefer to sit and wait for your answer......................

Well the first link is to a google of POR-15. And the second link I see 2-3 references to some conversations about it.

Just thought I'd spark another talk about it, see if it brings up any new ideas or thoughts; primarily answering my question about applying the cleaner and prep to other things than hard metals.

Apologies if that is inappropriate for a forum? We are here to talk after all and I'm not the first one to say or ask the same thing twice.

I think what txab was getting at is there are literally thousands of "personal experiences" already on the internet. The product has been around for quite sometime, so much so you could likely join an already ongoing conversation regarding it's performance.

No need to delete, maybe someone will eventually chime in, or you could PM one of the members from one of the threads from this site that has used it

I used it to cover my 66 gto frame when body was off. just clean up the metal and paint it on. worked well for me no issues. just don't get on your skin or you will have fun getting it off.

I just basically wire brushed the metal and covered up. depends on how particular you will be with the finish. I grew up in iowa and know the rust issues. cover up and no longer worry about it.
