Can I tow ? sierra 1500

I just bought a boat , and a truck, and I want to know I have towing covered.

 

I already have a plain jane 2008 Silverado 1500 2wd thats NOT up for the job engine and rear axle wise. So my new truck (being delivered tomorrow) is a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 double cab.

Here are the details:

 

4x4

5.3L ecotech V8

GVWR 7200 lbs

3.42 rear axle ratio

Tires 18" all terrain

Z71 Off road suspension package (if it matters)

Trailering package

 

The boat is a 25' Sea Ray and the manufacturer states it weighs 4600 lbs dry weight.

 

The trailer is a tandem axle 30 ' and is just under 1000 lbs.

 

I'm guessing with the boat & trailer & added weight from gas & gear I will be in the 6000 lb to 6500 lb weight range.

 

I will most likely be towing only 2 times a year on mostly flat interstate on a 2 hour trip from my home in NE Ohio to the dock in NW Ohio. Then back home in the fall.

 

The dealer and GMC insist the truck can handle 9600lbs.

 

I would like some assurance from people who know that I selected a good truck and engine / axle / packages to tow this boat with no worries and without straining the truck , and no worries on the boat ramp.

I should also add that I had the boat delivered and yesterday I hooked it up to the older silverado just to back it up the driveway closer to the house and the truck sunk so low that I could not fold up the wheel on the front of the trailer. I'm assuming the new sierra won't sink so low when I lower the trailer on it

You should be fine with the new pickup. My 2006 is rated for 9000 and I pulled that plus some and it did alright.

 

There's no way to tell exactly how low the truck will squat when you hook up to the boat, but it won't hurt anything. You could ask the boat dealer what the tongue weight is. It would be neat to see pictures hooked up and unhooked to see how far the boat pulls the pickup down.

My old truck (which I'm keeping for dirty work) is a 2008 silverado 1500 2wd WT with 6 cyl and 3.08 axle ( I think). Nothing fancy. I assumed the way it sunk was BC the suspension was not made for towing or offroad. I'm hoping the new truck won't sink so low. I understand the new truck has Z71 which comes with upgraded shocks and stabilizers. Thays what I'm hoping someone here could explain to me!

If it weighs what you said it's not going to be a problem. I'd check out "what have you towed with your 2014" thread and look at some of the things others have towed.

Just a little worried on how much my old truck sank from the weight and hoping my new truck won't sink so low

I have 14 Rado 5.3 cc 4x4 an z71. I just purchased a 19th travel trailer gross 6300lbs. Two adults one kid and two small dogs. I have pulled it a bit in the hill country in tx. No problems what so ever. Passed people on the hills. Trans temp never got high enough to worry. I do have a weight distribution hitch as well. Also install Firestone bags on the rear, helps out tremendously when at high speeds it takes out a

a lot of bounce that may happen from un even roads or dips, helps keep weight on front axles. I only keep 10 psi in them.

I'd tow that with my 4.3..... with the 3.43 rear end.....
