Any semi aggressive 275/70/18 that are NOT load range E?

Are there any aggressive style tread tires in 275/70/18 that are not load range E? I don't need a load range E tire for a half ton and more importantly I don't really want a 60lb. tire!

I poked around a little. No luck.

 

I noted that a 275/65-18 Toyo AT2 is available in a P275 with a SL rating, and weighs 51 lbs. That same size in a LT tire rated at C is either 50 or 53 lbs depending on which one you chose (I did decipher the difference). In a LT tire rated at E, the tire is shown at 53 lbs.

 

Goodyear didn't have what you want. Not from Michelin, Nitto or Toyo either.

 

I'm not sure what it all means, but you may have to buy a E tire or keep searching till you find an off-brand that has what you want.

 

I buy E rated tires for my trucks for their durability and resistance to puncture. So, I'm coming from the other side. There was a time when I had to shop a bit to get what I wanted. Not so much lately. The size I have now is almost exclusively E rated.

 

If you're worried about fuel economy of a E rated tire at say 60lbs verses say a C rated tire at say 56 lbs, I think you're not going to see a difference. If it's the ride quality difference you're concerned about, you would have to have the world's most sensitive butt to tell. I've owned LR E tires on all my trucks for the past 15 years and have also ridden in other peoples trucks. It's all about tire pressure when it comes to ride quality. Some people like to drive a 5000 lb pickup around with tires at 30 lbs. I drive mine up in the 40s for the control.

Thanks Spurshot, it makes sense I guess. I think most of these tires in this range were designed for the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks when they went to 18" a while back. I'll probably just suck it up and get the ST Maxx or the Duratrac in a 10 ply.

I have the ST Maxx. If you want a MT/AT cross, it's a decent tire. But it is noisy as it wears. None of them are noisy when they're brand new. About 5000 miles and they start singing pretty good.

 

You might look at the Cepek Fun Country as well as the Toyo R/T. Both are tires that were on my list. The Toyo hadn't come out yet, so it was out. The Cepek is close to the ST Maxx. Maybe even made by Cooper.

 

I had a bad experience with a set of Kumho tires. Never again. The dang things felt like they weren't connected to the rims. Steering at highway speeds was scary. The backend felt like it would go wherever it wanted. The whole truck felt like it was just wallowing. Tire Rack took them back at my insistence. They charged me a couple hundred bucks, but I was just so happy to get rid of them. They were their A/T tire in a LR E for my 2500.

I found somewhat of a compromise I guess. If I went just a hair bigger than stock in a 275/65/18 which is just a little wider and taller I can get a Duratrac that's not a 10 ply and only weighs 46 lbs.!!!

Nice! You have an experience with the rugged trail? The reviews look not so good....some people going as far as saying they should not even be sold anymore?

Had a set on my 98 Z71. It is lightweight construction - picked up few nails from construction sites. Replaced at about 22 or 23 thousand miles, when I upgraded wheels, with Michelin MS.

Oh - reviews at Tire Rack about average for this tire. Have 265/65/18 stock tires on my 2014 Z71 for now - looking at Cooper Zeon 275/70/18 E or ? next year.

It'd be interesting to see a test on what impacts fuel economy and ride quality. My bet is that weight is secondary to diameter change as is the load range to pressure.

My in depth testing has shown no effect from almost a 50% increase in tire weight.

I would say it goes diameter, width, tread pattern, compound, then weight.

 

And so far on this pickup, infinity percent increase in flat protection, haven't gotten one since I switched to 10 ply.

Had DuraTrac on my Hummer - BEST Tire Ive EVER had. My buddy just put them on his 14 Sierra Crew Z71 and agrees best tire hes ever had.

 

Plus as a P tire, you are able to get the Road Hazard with them.

 

2/32 less Tread than the LT tire, and its Stock size.

You are correct. After doing some digging on this many articles show overall tire weight has very little impact on mpg. Big impact on acceleration but not mpg once you are moving.....makes perfect sense. I guess I will go with the 10 ply.

I think you'll be happy with the LR E tire for its durability. If you tow heavy loads, the LR E provides some added margin against carcass failures
