Gen IV V-8 engines

Probably old news , but I just read in Wards Autoworld about the Gen IV V-8's:

1.  Due in "2006".

2.  Probably (in fact verrry likely) aluminun block.

3.  Strong enough to withstand "350-450 HP".

Also read somewhere else (forgot where) that GM is pumping serious cash into its tranny plant to build the new 6-speed rear wheel drive auto transmissions.  These should also be ready 'round 2006.

(I work for a large OEM supplier, so I "have" to read all of the trade rags every month).

Looks like we will prolly have to wait untill then for major HP and torque increases?  I forsee the current Gen III's getting maybe 15-20 more HP (incrementally) and little if any more torque untill the redesign comes out.  Just my $.02

Ryan, GM will begin "phasing in (DOD) as standard in certain truck app's" in 2004.   Heres some info on how it will (is supposed to!) to work:

"When conditions are right, the control system commands hydraulically activated pins to release, allowing the lower halves of those lifters to telescope into the top halves when pushed by the cam lobes, so the valves are not activated. With both valves closed following combustion, the pistons in those cylinders come up and compress the exhaust gases instead of pumping them out. On the downstroke, the gases expand, then compress and expand again, like a spring. We want compression to energize the rings to prevent drawing oil into the chamber,; Juriga explains, and we want to keep those cylinders warm because you do not want cold cylinders when you start them up again. It becomes a four-cylinder engine running at a more open throttle condition, improving volumetric efficiency and reducing pumping losses, with very little loss in the system. He adds that the control system must be highly intelligent for DOD. For example, we have to provide a different fuel schedule to get those cylinders to fire off again without a problem. Also, DOD provides a greater percentage improvement on larger engines because a larger engine spends more time in the four-cylinder mode".

I work in a tech center is SW Missouri.  More letters after everbodies names than I can shake a stick at.  Right now times r tuff as the OEM's beat the #### out of us for price concessions.  So people are "retiring" early and not getting replaced very often.  I have no letters after my name and am pretty much a jus' a pencil pushing schlep.  BTW we make belts, hoses, tensioners, and other intake goodies for all the worlds automakers.  Our biggest customer is Ford.  I do know that bout 5 weeks ago, we killed off our "baby powerstroke" project.  Not good news for those that would like a small diesel (be it a GM or DCX or Ford) in their 1/2 tons or sp'utes.

If I'm not mistaken the GMPT Willow Run plant in Ypsilanti, just east of here (Ann Arbor) will be re-tooling for the 6-speeds.

Also, I could have bet money that GM would wait for tranny development to get where they wanted it before introducing new GenIV engines - so let's hope the new engines (5.3L to 6.0L) are rated about 375 HP or more!!  :thumb:  :chevy:

car and driver had a DOD truck early last yr.  They really liked it (they usually dont like domestic vehicles especially trucks).  Looks promising

375HP in the new engines  :flag:  might have to stop looking at the GTOs now  :chevy:
