yes you can just replace the glass.  Make sure you give the dealer your vin to order the correct mirror

Without your vin they cant order the correct mirror

funny because i knocked my mirror out of the whole thing.  Hit the ground and shattered.  I called in they ordered one went to get it it was wrong.  They needed my vin reordered and it fit great.  Very easy to tke out and replace.  Should take about 2 min max.  There was like 11 pages of mirrors (different suppliers) in the parts dept computer.  The cost was $36 for mine (non heated).  Sounds like your dealer wants to make a quick buck and make you buy the whole thing.

Try another dealer or try http://www.partszoneonline.com email them they will get you a part number and a price (probably cheaper than locally)

I replaced mine with the Muth signal mirrors.  They are heated as well.

I got those part #'s off a Google search.

I know the Heated RH p/n is good, I used it to order a new heated glass for my passenger side mirror.

Dimming won't work on yours without running additional wires.  My guess is the glass will need a switched ignition power feed and a wire run from the rearview mirror to the outside mirror.  The rearview mirror has an output for controlling other mirrors (it's one of those unused pins in the mirror connector).

When I upgraded the mirrors on my 01 Silverado from standard to heated I got the glass from my dealer. If I remember correctly the good guy price (as my parts dealer called it) was like $22.00 a piece. I think the real price is $30.00 a piece.

On my '02 Duramax, the right hand outside mirror cracked a week after I took delivery.  I went in to the dealer and asked the service person how much it would be for me to replace mirror...they told me that they didn't do that as they replaced the entire mirror assembly.  I was about to go into orbit when they told me it was under warranty.  The pulled off the entire assembly and replaced it with a new one....I've often wondered if a person couldn't purchase just the mirror.
