Clay_Lucas Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 I'm pretty sure my rear end just went out. Its locking up when I turn then makes a loud pop and jumps. Almost like it's in 4wd So I called the dealer ship and they said it's a 3:73 posi. What years have the same rear end? would a suburban be the same? I know the local yard has a few suburban's for $160 and that seems like a pretty good price. I'm not going to be able to buy anything new, so I'm going to have to find a good used part. Is there any good interchange programs or sites?
DwayneJ Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Half ton trucks over a wide range of years the harder part will be matching your gears and brakes or potentially swapping your brakes to the "new" axle if they don't match. I would start by looking at 1999-2004 half ton stuff.
02suburbanZ71 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 All 1500 trucks will have the same size axle except 1500HD and AXN. Its an 8.625 in. Just be sure to get a G80 axle and disks if you have em. Before you buy at the junk yard its a good idea to pop the cover and inspect the internals
DwayneJ Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 G80 chunks might be what is wrong with the current.
Clay_Lucas Posted March 15, 2015 Author Posted March 15, 2015 G80 chunks might be what is wrong with the current. How do I check? I was wrong and the only rear end I can find is $550. I found a 2500 frame for $400 though.
Clay_Lucas Posted March 16, 2015 Author Posted March 16, 2015 It's at a friends house, he hasn't really looked at it yet because it's going to be a week or so before I have the money to fix it. To check you open the cover and see what broke. I'm pretty sure that its bad. For some reason one of the shock mounts is bent, the rear drive line was moving around so much that it was rubbing against the muffler so it was moving at least 4 inches, it makes a loud poping sound when I make any turns and then the whole truck vibrates and shakes when I'm going straight. Would the rear end from a tahoe work? I don't think I'll find a rear end very soon, is this a common problem??
Clay_Lucas Posted March 22, 2015 Author Posted March 22, 2015 Drove it around without the rear drive line and it still locked up really bad, almost didn't want to move at all, sounds like it's skipping or shearing teeth. Getting a used rear end next weekend. Anything I should watch for next? The transmission feels good engine is pretty strong, new throttle body, alternator, fue pump, radiator, drivers side hub assembly and some other small stuff. What's most likely to go wrong next? It's a family owned truck (I'm the second owner) and it has been well maintained. I'd like to be a little more prepared for whatever goes bad next.

Clay be sure to inspect the dust shields on the new axle because sometimes their bent and rusted and make a lot of noise and you'll hate it. Also its always a good idea to inspect the differential with the cover off before you buy it, just to make sure its not damaged or has lots of metal shavings
Clay_Lucas Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 What's the best oil to use? Will I need to get any additive for it?
02suburbanZ71 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 75-90w amsoil gear oil. NO additive. Replace the gasket too. But take the fill plug off first
Clay_Lucas Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 The amsoil Severe Gear 75-90 is supposed to be pretty good. Probably will do the transfer case fluid too. That's the auto track II stuff right?

That's the auto track II stuff right? only gm autotrac fluid. No other company makes a substitute. Gm has additives in that fluid that no other adds
