Is this Good or bad?

We're hitting somewhere around 20k miles a year with  our X-Terra. I'mfiguring that because the 1 year anniversary of us  getting it was the first week of this  month, and it says on the odo 20k miles.

40-50% of that has been on Long Trips (Over 70 miles one-way.)

Is this bad for the vehicle?

Would we have been better off in something else?

Can an older vehicle  stand up to that kind of stuff? (I'm pretty sure I'll be doing the same thing when I get my truck. )

I average about 20k miles a year in my 97 and it does just fine

This is mostly short trips around the field roads and a lot of idling

Have had a few problems but almost all of them caused by me

Dont worry about the high mileage per year ... unless you are constantly driving it like you stole it

Or unless you actually stole it, they might see you in it...driving around all the time like that. :D

20k miles is above the "average" mileage driven by the "average" suburbanite slob.

But most of us are a cut above the average slob, so that makes it okay. :flag:

20k a year is nothing for the most part. Distance mileage is way better on the vehicle than short trips.

As long as you take care of the it, ie. preventive maintenance, it will go a long time. You will just have the usual wear items.

We put 24k on both of our vehicles this past year. I will probably be holding on to mine for a long time but the wife will probably get a new vehicle in 4 to 5 years. Mainly due to wear and tear of youngin's on the interior. :chevy:

Doing better than me, only had my truck for 6 months and already has 15,250 on it. Course I travel an average of 80 miles a day.

My wife's '02 Venture van just turned 32000 (in 15 months) and my '02 2500HD 8.1L CC just turned 26000 in 10 months.  We both drive more than 30 miles 1 way to work with very little stop and go (country living is great but NOTHING is close) plus all of the other 'things' we have to do transporting kids for school or scout events, time we put in for church and community and of course, family road trips.

Bummed,

Have you heard anything about the intakes leaking coolant on the ventures? I was told by several people that is a big problem.  I'm going to keep an eye on ours and take an oil sample now and then to try and catch it before it happens. Especially if I can get it under warranty. Like yours, if my wife keeps up at her rate the 36k will be out way under the 3 year mark.

20k is pretty good. I've put close to 30k on my truck in a year and half. I figure my truck has had about 25k-30k a year put on it since it was new. I bought it with 73k and now it has 105k

My dad's 89 silverado only has 60,000 miles and probably 70% of them are either pulling our trailer or hauling stuff.

I've always put 30-36K a year on my trucks.  Average speeds (based on hour meter) are about 48 MPH - lots of freeway driving.  Unfortunately, I get the itch for a new vehicle ever 2-3 years so I take a bath on depreciation and never get to see if running synthetic oil and doing all the right maintenance really helps at 200 - 250K.  (Trying to break that habit, but it's tough.)

The people who seem to have the most maintenance problems are those who have low mileage and only drive short trips to work and shopping everyday.  The engine (and everything else) never really warms up.  A lady at work was recently complaining about a cracked resonator on her babied 3 year-old Saturn.  She has an 8 mile commute and the thing probably cracked from water accumulating in the exhaust.

I have nothing on you guys. I have had my X-Terra for 2 and a half years and I only have 16K on mine. I have an 8 mile round trip drive to work. Tim uses his truck on long trips. My miles have really gone down since the gas prices have gone up. I don't do a lot of driving on my days off and I don't go out of my way for stuff. I know these trucks are ment to be driven and they can take what we dish out...but I don't really have anywhere to go..

I have not heard about that.  I am taking the Van in this week for an Oil change and brake check and I will ask the tech to be on the lookout.  (and no, it won't be done at the dealership unless I need warranty work also).

thanks.

Bummed,

Here is a link to one forum that the dealer replace the gasket's for free even thought the warranty was out. Now if they do that then they know there is a problem.

Intake leak

There are more and the one I wanted to show you I can't find now.
