No Four Wheel Drive

I have a 2008 Chevy 2500HD LTZ. The four wheel drive doesn't work. The front axle engages but not the transfer case. On the lift while in four wheel drive only the rear tires spin. I can spin the front tires by hand and the front driveshaft turns but that's it. I tried to relearn the transfer case motor with a scan tool but that didn't change anything. Also if you put it in four wheel drive while drive you hear somewhat of a grinding until you slow way down then it makes a clunk but still not in four wheel drive. I just bought this truck and I changed the transfer case fluid as it was very dirty and there was some shavings (Nothing Big) on the drain plug.

Sounds like something has gone wrong inside the transfer case.

I'd have it scanned, but as stated above the transfer case isn't engaging. It "could be" the encoder motor, but rather than guess I'd take it in to be sure.

Did you refill the transfer case with the correct fluid?

Sounds like internal issue with case, if the fluid removed was really bad and there were shavings the damage could be already done.

Yes fluid was replaced with amsoil. And everything seems to be working outside the transfer case so I will have to pull the transfer case and split it. Is there anything common to breaking inside?
