2016 Sierra Denali Headlights & Taillights on a 2015 Sierra Denali

Smh...I just saw a black GMC Sierra Denali like what I have, but something caught my eye that was different about it when it applied the brakes. I followed it...lol...and sure enough, they grill, bumper, headlights, taillights, foglights, etc. were all different. I will say, I like my bumper, foglights, and grill better, but I GOTTA have those headlights...and possibly taillights. Has anyone did the swap or know if they're interchangeable?

I don't think anyone has yet, based on the info the engineer from GM gave me it wont be easy at all. Wiring is different, BCM calibration is different as well. GM pretty much made sure that the new lights could not be used on previous generation trucks. Has something to do with DOT requirements that GM has to go thru to certify and validate the headlights for the model year they are to be used in.

The verdict is still out on the taillights as far as I know. Nobody has posted anything definitive here.

As for the headlights, a couple guys have seen them up close and you would need a whole new front end. Mounting points and everything are different. They definitely made sure we couldn't swap in the headlights.

I work at a GMC dealer and we tried for a couple guys that were asking... the wiring is all different so unless someone makes or is going to make a kit there will need to be a re-wire... could require a reflash... I am not in that part of the business so I am not to sure... Only know it was not able to plug and play. Hope that might help. Merry Christmas you filthy animals!

Are the mounting points actually different?

DYI came up with a hardness for the use of LED headlights on SLE trucks so I am sure someone will come up with one eventually. What I want to know if they actually fit? When we say new front in from what I have seen yes the headlights , grill and bumper are different but not the hood or fenders .... As far as the taillights I am assuming an even easier fit but I want confirmation from someone and also to see where you can even buy them. Part numbers would be great!!

There was a thread a few weeks ago, I can't find it now. Someone specifically said they had a 2016 in the shop and looked at the headlights and he said they wouldn't fit a 2015 and "you would need a new front end". I don't know what that means unless they did change the mounting points on purpose. Anything electrical can be overcome but the physical is tougher. Especially when it's almost a thousand bucks for a single 2016 headlight it better be perfect.

If I didn't live an hour and a half from the nearest GM dealership I would go check it out myself.

And even if you can get them mounted it doesn't mean they will work, even with wiring changes. If GM made changes to the BCM as I was lead to believe they did as I see no reason why the engineer would lie about it then you are also talking about something more than the wiring harness to the lights and getting into a chassis harness along with trying to get the BCM programmed which will be all but impossible to do unless GTPrix is able to do it.

I am thinking GM and most of the other manufactures are trying their best to make sure people don't modify much on the vehicles any more to reduce their liability in the long run.

I doubt they care about liability, as they wouldn't be liable for anything you did aftermarket. What they really care about is people buying new trucks and if they can get even a few people to upgrade from a 2014 or 2015 for the new headlights and taillights then they have done their job of screwing the consumer out of as much money as possible.

Though personally I would believe that the money they make in parts sales by selling us $1800 pairs of LED headlights and then wiring harnesses and BCM programming would far outweigh the few willing to upgrade to a whole new truck.

It is completely about liability, case in point look no further than VAG and the current diesel scandal. The .gov has a very long arm and the courts have proven many times over that a manufacture can be held liable for something even if they didn't design it to be used in that manner. Case in point the lights, they are certified thru the DOT to meet certain requirements for a certain model year vehicle. When I was speaking with the lighting engineer before the lighting update came out that was one of topics we spoke about was all of the legal steps GM had to go thru to test, validate and then get .gov approval for the lights to be updated the way they did.

Plus in the end people will mod the system and then if they have issues will take it into the dealer and want warranty work and sadly since a lot of these systems are all tied together now messing with one system can have effects on the other systems. CANBUS is a huge driver of that is my guess since it is the communication protocol all of the modules use to talk back forth now.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
