Rearend options.

I'm on my second 10 bolt g80. It's nearly done, not many miles left on it befor it blows u0 like the last one.

 

What are the options for a rearend? I'm looking at the 14 bolt 3/4 ton but it's hard to find one for a decent price. Isn't there another year that almost fits? Needs some mounts moved and re welded? I don't have a problem with the six loss in the front and eight in back.

9.5" 14 bolt was available in the half tons under code AXN. It's harder to find as it was only used in the 6 liter and 6.2 powered trucks from 2005 through 2013. The 05 to 07 classic ones all have drum brakes and then the newer ones are discs...... but they bolt in the same regardless. Keeps your 6 lug pattern. If you don't care about lugs the light duty 3/4 tons and 1500HD's from 1999 through 2007 have the 9.5" with 8 lug axles. They are different housings than the half ton AXN code version as those used 10 bolt wheel bearings at the end and 10 bolt axle flanges. Or you can even go back and get the previous body style ( 88-98) 6 lug 9.5" rear but they are narrower overall than the GMT800 rear ends and are generally a lot cheaper. If you want to weld perches and whatnot you can put any rear end you want in there lol. So many options.

Will this work? Pretty cheap, leave me some money to get a decent locker.

Ok. I'll probably have to look for one for this range of trucks.

 

Looks like a lot of work. I can get it welded easily, would I be able to keep the drums? Any issues with the proportioning valve?

 

I need something inexpensive (no way I'm paying $500+ for a 10bolt) that doesn't need to be modified too much. Don't really like drums, but they will work fine in the rear until I can do the swap, as long as they will actually work.

 

Thanks for the help. Looking forward to having a rearend I don't have to be worried about.

I'm picking that one up for $45 on tuesday, keeping the drums. As far as I know, all I need is the u joint kit and to move the spring mounts?

Yep. And a conversion u joint like you already said. You will have to fiddle with the amount of pressure going to the rear if you are converting from disc to drum but that's just an adjustable valve away.

What do you mean by that? Is there already an adjustment I can do in the stock master cylinder?

Discs and drums don't operate at the same pressure. A lot of guys have to dial pressure down to avoid rear wheel lockup going the other way ( drum to disc). You will have to see how it goes as those wheel cylinders should be pretty big in those drums.

I have an 05 rearend in it right now, using the PITA single spring drum system. They don't seem to work very well, but I'm fairly sure it's because they aren't bled very well and the drums are getting thin.

 

How can I adjust the pressure to the rear?

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
