What bug shield

Shortly after picking up my new 2000 Silverado from the dealer, I installed a Lund Interceptor bug shield. It has a nice sporty look compared to many other brands/models. After three years it looks like crap. Very dull; looks like it is a hundred years old. I don't know if I cared for it impropery or what (I have used bug remover on it. That probably didn't help). I want to replace and found some Draw Tite bug deflectors on ebay for about $25. Does anyone have one of these and how does it look? I really like the Lund and may buy another, buy I want something that will hold up for a while.

I bought a Bug Deflector II. Try using some product like Back to black or Armor-all type products to bring it back to life as well to protect it. They also make plastic type polishes, sorry I don't know the name right off hand.

The new Lund chameleon looks interesting.  You can also buy the matching window visors that fit in the window channels.  I have been watching to see one on the road.

I think using the bug and tar remover on that plastic did it in. My ventshades, while on the side, look just fine. I have only washed them. I can't stand it any longer, I have to get a new one this week. :smash:

Try some Plastic Cleaner/Polish. Heck...if you have some handy even try some regular paint polish. Buff it out good and you may be suprised by the results. I used some on the headlights of my fiancee's car and it really brightened them up. They were brown and hazy and it really affected the light output...buffed them out and they look brand new. I also applied some polish to the plastic hood of my Toro riding mower. The mower sat out last year (garage was full) and it was very faded and scratched up. It looked more white than red. The polish made it look great again. You got nothing to lose...but if it does work you could save yourself $100 that could be put to better use.

If you do have to replace it then take a look at the Lund Stainless Steel Bug Deflector. I love mine. Take a look at it on my website: http://www.freewebs.com/mnz-71

Whatever you decide to do I have a good tip for you. Apply a couple coats of a good carnuba wax to your bug shield. The bugs come off much easier that way. There is also good product out there to remove bugs that is less harsh. Its called Splatt Bug Remover. Its bright green and comes in a clear spray bottle. I got mine at Checker Auto Parts. It does a good job and doesnt strip wax. You just spray it on, let it soak for a minute. Then spray it off with a spray nozzle on your garden hose (you might need a soft terry towel to wipe) or use a high pressure sprayer at a car wash.

Hey, that worked!!! I did a quick  10 minute polish with some Meguiars (in between the rain clouds today) and it revive the bug guard. I figure I'll give it a good polishing tomorrow and not purchase a new one. Thanks again for that tip, MN Z71.

That is funny you asked about draw tite.

I recently bought and installed one from e-bay.

It looks ok, installed real easy. One problem, I started to

hear rattling, and its driving me nuts. I could not figure it out,

the last couple of days I have been working on it. At first I thought it was the bug shield. By chance I

came across the article on this very topic, on this site. I am going to try sealing the molding around the window. Has anyone else had this problem? If so what product did you use to fix this? I love this site.
