Not being able to upgrade is a load of crap! I received this reply from [email protected] when I inquired about it last August. I'm going to give it another go and see if the answer remains the same. Not holding my breath.

To answer your question, certain updates were made to model year 2016 hardware that enable the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay user experience. We do not plan to offer these technologies to existing customers and unfortunately there is not an option to ugrade prior model year vehicles. My sincere apologies. GM is in the business to sell trucks. No reason to offer an upgrade outside of trading in your old truck. That said, give the aftermarket a chance. We will be taken care of but it will cost a little cash.

digital dash solutions on ebay sells the navigation io5 to io6 upgrades for 14-16 trucks , he is now offering 2016 navigation upgrade with apple carplay and says its available for 14-15 models as well using the 2016 module , he will have android auto as soon as GM releases it

 

if you search " silverado mylink " on ebay and look for the 2016 upgrade , if you read it he says if you have a 14-15 silverado contact him about adding it with the 16 module for extra .

I was thinking about buying this upgrade, but I can't justify the cost for that feature. I think GM should just provide us with it.

If GM doesn't provide a upgrade I'm gonna try this , I'm waiting on android auto myself , I like my truck just want the android auto feature

They could sell it! I would buy it. Ford does a much better job with software updates to their infotainment system.

What makes it so bad is that it seems GM has pretty much abandoned 2014-15 mylink and intellilink. I can partially understand them not upgrading 14-15 to android auto/carplay, but at least bring some new features to mylink and intellilink through software updates.
