Anyone cut their pipe right in front of the muffler?? Im thinking of doing this and leaving it running like that... This is the first truck ive ever owned that is quite and i feel like an old man.. I really dont have the money to blow on a whole new exhaust right now so im just thinking of using the old sawzaw... Comment please!

Years ago on my 2007, same body style and I also had the 5.3L, I had a local shop remove the muffler and weld a straight pipe in. I had always had louder exhaust on my trucks and wanted to kind of use this as an experiment, it only cost me $40. That setup crackled so terribly bad and that is the one thing I can't stand, the glassback crackle and pop. I ended up going to a Flowmaster 10 series and was pretty pleased with how it sounded. I think my favorite exhaust I had was the Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 Series muffler I had on my 2008 HD 6.0L.

Long story short, if you must go on the cheap then have the muffler removed and a straight pipe welded in. If you want to spend $100 - $200, go find a performance muffler and have it welded in place of the factory one.

Just ordered a flowmaster 40 series off amazon has 3 inch center inlet with duel 2.5 inch outlets hope this works.. Plan on cutting the old pipe up to make turn downs behind the muffler....

Well here it is all welded up.. Done this at my dads in the garage in about 2 hours.. Removed the old and installed the new.. Used my cheap 110 fix core welder I got at harbor freight awhile back.. Worked great even tho my dad said it wouldn't weld it.. I guess he forgot I can weld with just about anything considering I have welded my whole working career...b5538e506ef08114ab12a67f9d2bde24.jpgd12f6811de1169a91a6c7d840975cc53.jpgb2fb19fc035d6f481cbe337f15b3599e.jpg

I have a 14 model 5.3

I'm looking to order a muffler

Is the factory pipe size 3inch

I believe it's 2 3/4 or maybe a lil bigger cause the 3 inch inlet pipe on my muffler was a really tight fit but was good so no gaps to fill when I welded it... Mine is an 08 it should be the same on urs... I'd go with 3 inch inlet for sure... My outlets are 2 1/2 ..... I'm only in this for $90 and that was the muffler cost

Will a turn-down in front of the rear axle put too much exhaust heat into the rear diff making it run hotter than it should?

I have run turn downs on almost every truck I've owned... Never had a problem with anything in the rear end all the heat goes to the ground... If I didn't use turn downs maybe it would heat up the rear end.. And it would cause rust to the bottom of the bed is what I'm told without the turn downs
