Photo Software

My compute came with Adobe Photo Deluxe.  I would like something else.  I like the way poeple are able to do captions, make arrows pointing to a specific spot, or able to cirle or form a box for the same reason.

What is good and are most of these programs updatable after purchase.  I am not an internet genius, so something that is okay to use by a borderline idiot would be good.

photoshop is reall good but it has tons and tons of features.  i have been using it for a long time now and i still find stuff and go, whoa!  Plus, if you pay for it, it is extremely expensive.

but if you want the best of the best, then photoshop is the way to go.

I agree Photoshop is the best, but it's as expensive as h***, and has a lot of features that are really only used in very specific apps, or by pros, so you pay a lot for many features you will never use - probably.

Pain Shop Pro is very good (I think they still have a shareware version you can DL for free), and even if you decide to buy it, it's reasonably priced as I recall.

I have used www.tucows.com

as a general reference and repository for shareware software, and I am sure there are probably better ones than that out there in the ether.  They do have a section on graphics and imaging software.

In case you're not aware, the name tucows comes from the way they rate software - by the number of "cows".

Good luck!

I have PS Elements that I got at Costco for 50 bucks after rebate.  It has many of the great features of PS, and leaves out mostly everything your average user would never touch.

A decent compromise.  50 bucks for Elements, or 500 for full blown PS.

I'm happy with Elements.

Photoshop but I am a beginner.  Also have JASC PS PRo I believe Version 7 (show how much I use it.  I find that sometimes software gets so complex (read that as good) that I dont learn it very well.  I am better off with lesser programs that I use more.  As for photoshop, you need to sit down and go throuh the tutorial beginning to end.  Get a book on it.  Devote some time.  Thats the only way and as Siilt pointed out, you still learn stuff  long after you own the program.  As for you guys offering "free" software.  Shame on you.  I would never do that.

Ahhh NewbieZ71 the saint........

Seriously though, Photoshop is pretty darn good.  If you are just looking for a photo editor, take a look at ACDSee, very cool program.

However, if you are of the downloading variety, try this sight

I use PhotoShop CS3. It's expensive but it is the best. I use it for all of my websites so it is worth it to me. I can see how it might not be worth spending the cash if it weren't business related. Go to download.com and download some demos. You can find something that works well for what you want for much less $$$.

For people that don't want to pay big $$$ for CS2/3 or any other Photoshop program. There's always The Gimp. Almost all the functionality of Photoshop, and it's free, open source, and has stacks of extensions. Even a couple that make the user interface identical to Photoshop.
