Anyone Experiencing Backup Camera Performance Issues?

Recommended Posts

I live in the Pacific Northwest so we see our fair share of drizzly, misty and foggy weather. My backup camera is the worst that I have owned and I am trying to determine if there are any quick fixes. Specifically, the factory location is not protected from the rain or water dripping off the tailgate handle. It is either obscured by water droplets or fogged over in the mornings, which makes backing down a long and dark driveway interesting.

Anyone else experiencing this issue or have a simple fix?

Simple fix.... Back into your parking spot instead of into the road.

Less simple fix. Rain-x and back into your parking spot.

Unfortunately, my driveway is 200 ft long so backing up is a necessity. I do not have issues with parking spaces. The mirrors work great, but heated option on mirrors does not help first thing in the morning.

I had the same grime and water issues with my camera. That, plus glare at times, and the low quality of the image overall meant there are times its totally useless. Its like GM put it on because they wanted a marketing advertising line and not an actual useful feature...

I had fashioned a little three-sided cover/shield out of aluminum sheetmetal and used double-sided tape to affix it to see how it worked out before getting more permanent. Worked pretty darn well, until the tape gave out somewhere and I lost it. I've been meaning to make another and screw it on, but just haven't gotten around to it. It took awhile to cut that first one with tin snips and get the angles right.

You are more than welcome to make you one, and then send me one as a thank you for my idea. :)

Good idea. It may be my best option at this point. I have an old door handle from my former Ford F350. I may try to Dremmel the small plastic support braces on the back to a smooth finish, cut and shape it to fit using the bottom clean edge as the exposed portion.

How did you back down your driveway before having a vehicle with a back up camera?? What worked in the past will work again. I also back down a long driveway (120 feet) and I still use my side mirrors like I was taught to in drivers ed many years ago.

My Honda and my Infiniti were all the same. This truck is the same.

Since I walk past the tailgate on the way out to the truck, I swipe my finger over the lens of the camera before I get in.

Literally takes .5 seconds.

I'm sure it won't be an issue when the roads aren't covered in snow, water and salt.

Flat back will suck all of the dirt and rain right into the camera.

I wish they would use the self cleaning lenses like they do in car racing ha ha.
