Need some ideas for a job while in college.  Mom's selling the house and helping me get an apartment, but need to start making more than I currently do at Subway.  Any ideas?

Not sure where  you live, but it seems that all over the country these call-centers are popping up (I actually work in one).  Most have flexible hours, and promote education.  They also usually start $8-$10 an hour.

when i was in college I work at the college for the summer...the pay at subway is probably better, but it was pretty good because most of the time we just slacked off.  I do know some people that worked at a beer distibutor.  They got some pretty good pay, and they got some perks too....like free beer.  One summer I did nothing and hung out at the pool all day, I played more marco polo/Shark with neighborhood kids all day long....it was a lot of fun too.

If I were to do it over again, I'd have gotten my EMT-B sooner and worked for a service while in college.  Flexible hours (usually all the hours you can handle) and $10-15 an hour.  

Not to mention you'd feel like you're doing something worthwhile.  :thumb:

1) Bartender...good tips

 

2) Paper delivery guy...don't laugh, my friends made bank doing this in high school (but that was 10+ years ago).  These days you don't even have to get out of your car (or even stop is appears).  Just throw it "near" the driveway.

 

3) Seasonal work in the summer months usually pays good and you have opportunities for OT.  I was a grunt for a painting company for two years.  Made enough in three months (12 hr days + weekends) to feed me during the school months.

 

4)  Internships!!! The big leg up I had over all of my fellow students when we hit the market was I had multiple internships on my resume that applied to my degree.  Some fields don't pay their interns, but yours might.

College was long ago, but two summers I got vacation coverage jobs at the GM plant where my dad worked and made good money.  The other two summers I made less money but got more career experience working IT jobs.

 

My daughter is working in an auto parts factory and enjoying it after putting up with retail and food service.

Some of my freinds at school work at the one around here and they make some pretty decent money.  I would go apply but I love my job.

Looks like I'm going to get a bachelors in Criminal Justice, although I am going to be a career firefighter/paramedic after college, getting my EMT-B soon.

the subway gig may not be a bad idea...atleast 1 guaranteed meal.   Around here in the summer you can get a "rent a cop" job starting at $15 as long as criminal justice or something similar is your major.  A friend of mine did it and they kept him on year round.

If you can Qualify, try the National Guard or maybe even ROTC.

In many states, if you are in the Guard, your college is free and you get paid for your drill weekends.  

 

If the guard or reserve unit nearest you has requirements for medics or corpmen, you might be able to get your EMT through government training and still get paid to go to college

 

Visit the nearest recruiting office, or go to the ROTC office on campus and see what's available.

 

I joined the Marine Corps right out of High School (my SAT's were in the 13s, but I didn't want to go straight to college, I wanted to travel) and went to basic and then advanced electronics classes right out of boot camp.   After school, I began working immediately on aircraft 'black boxes'.

 

I enjoyed the Corps enough that I stayed in for 22 years and in that time I earned a BS in Electronics and an MS in Computers, all 100% paid for by the government.  I now work in the civilian sector and in September I will be starting my Ph.D (in computers), again, 100% paid for by the governement using my veterens benefits.

 

As I said, if you can qualify, at least look into it.  You might just be amazed at what is really available.

Then definately go for an EMS job.  Lots of time to study...  One service around here seems to have quite a few FF/Medics from other towns working part time.  There's nothing like knowing people when you're looking for a job after graduation.  Plus, you'll have interaction with cops on many calls.

Finally, the service may pay for your EMT-I or Medic school.  Are you in EMT-B class now?  I just finished mine, and have the practical test next week.  

 

I can also sing praises for paid interships.  My IT (My major) internship turned into a FT job for my last year in school and after graduation.  There's not exactly a plethora of paid internships in Criminal Justice though... (That was my minor)

I don't know, I don't think I'd find Joe all that intimidating  :crackup:

 

 

But like Ryan said try Menards or Home Depot or something like that.  I believe Home Depot's pay scale is around 9 or 10 bucks an hour which is pretty decent money for a poor college student.

I might try that ems company thing, my fire department is paying my way through emt school so that's not a concern right now.  Just want to see what else is out there to make it worthwhile to leave subway

      2015 Sierra Denali L86 cyl 5 misfire at idle

      Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions?

      2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!

      Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?.

      He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it.

      I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.
