2013 2500HD Slight Steering Clunk

Hi Guys

 

I have an 18,000 mile 2013 GMC 2500HD that has a slight steering clunk at times. It feels like the older generation trucks that had the intermediate shaft problem. It appears that the design of the shaft has changed, and the 2013 shouldn't be affected by the poorly designed shaft of previous generations. Can anyone confirm this? I see that the manufacturers that list new shafts don't offer anything for the 2013. Has anyone else experienced the same issue with the newer trucks? I plan on taking a look this weekend, but I'd like to know if I should start at the shaft, or maybe look at the rest of the suspension.

Keep in mind they didn't install steering dampers on all the 2500hd/3500s. That makes a world of difference in itself...

 

My 2012 had the frame brackets and the tierod was drilled, but no damper....seemed they only dropped damper on some of the trucks, so they left mounting options on all the trucks. I installed a GM damper after the first trip down a dirt road.

Often times we don't hear back from the original poster on the resolution to their problem, so I thought I'd follow up with an update on my steering clunk. I finally made the time to take the truck to the dealer to have them take a look. Although I thought the problem might be related to the intermediate shaft, neither the aftermarket nor the message boards indicated that this era of truck had a faulty intermediate shaft design like previous models. After inspection, it was determined that the steering column itself was bad. Believe it or not the dealer actually had one in stock. They swapped a few components from the old one to the new one, and about 3 hours later the issue was resolved. The steering is now nice and tight as it should be. As you can imagine, I was very pleased with the dealer's ability to get the issue resolved in a single trip.
