Tuning?

Hey guys, I have a 2001 Silverado. It's a 2500HD with the vortec (gas) 6.0 motor. Right now, all I have performance wise on it is a magnaflow muffler. I would like to get rid of the crappy intake and replace it with a k&n or something high flow. Also, I would like to cut the cats off. (Magnaflow would stay on) now, most forums that I have read have guys that say "don't ever do that you need back pressure you'll lose power" and all that Bologna. I know that's not true. I have quite a bit of experience with fourwheelers and dirt bikes. The reason they say you'll lose power is that once it has so much more air flow, your air to fuel ratio is too lean, and thus reducing power. A proper tune will get a ton of power over stock with those mods. Now, I have done this with my fuel Injected raptor 700. I put a high flow intake on, high flow exhaust, and tuned it with a power commander. Worked like a charm. My question is, how can I do that with my truck? I've never done it with a car/truck before. Is there a device I can buy? Can I do it myself? Will a dealership do it? How much would it cost? Thanks in advance

Dear "Bolongna" ,

1. The reason there is a loss of power with the exhaust cleaned out is that Back pressure INCREASES TORQUE. This is why the truck "LS" heads have a more restrictive exhaust ports than the car "LS" engines .

2. The stock air cleaner isnt very restrictive, I have noticed NO actual difference with a K&N under hood Except that when it was on, it took in HOT air, vs the stock which uses cooler, denser, outside air.

3. Emissions. In "Most states" Emissions on 3/4 ton trucks are NOT tested, as they are NOT used for manufacturer Cafe standards. They may, however check to see if the exhaust is all there if its loud.

4. There are tuners by Superchips available to re tune the truck, that are stand alone, which is probably better than major physical mods that will never be returned to stock.

5. expect to make the already bad fuel economy, WORSE.

6. Most important, open your wallet and have fun.... Good luck !

So those chips automatically adjust for any intake or exhaust modifications? How do they know what's been done? On my raptor it has buttons on it and you can press them up or down to deliver more or less fuel

I have the same spec truck over here in the UK.

I fitted a K&N panel filter in the standard airbox, cos I don't see a CAI giving any real benefit. And I got a great deal on the K&N, making it about the price of two OEM replacement filters.

Over here the smog test makes keeping the cats compulsory, so they have to stay.

I'll be fitting a Flowmaster muffler as soon as funds permit, then I hope a Black Bear tune.

Bringing stuff across the pond is spendy!

Good luck!

I've seen a few postd they open up the fender side of the air box and the home in the fender to let it breathe better. I'm think of doing that and replacing the muffler with something and getting a diablo sport tuner. My muffler needs replaced anyways it rattles so something came loose in it. I was thinking of getting 2 33" 3” inlet/outlet glasspacks I seen on jegs in place of the muffler.

Im pretty positive I'm going efi live autocal. I'm just thinking of going with 5 star tuning because 3 tunes can be had for $50 less than one black bear tune. I thought about getting a v2, but I don't know the slightest thing about tuning a gas engine. And efilive will never be available for my 04.5 Dodge so unless I buy another vehicle or 2 that is efi live capable I think I'll stick with an autocal.

Get a blackbear tune designed just for you. I put 100k on my 05 hd with one. Worth every cent. Friends did exahust and etc and still not the gains i seen. He finally had a tune done. Better driveability, little better mpg, more ump. I grossed 27k climbig mt passes. Not a issue. Great investment in a pro doing his work.

5 star will do 3 tunes of my choice tailored to my needs with trans tuning for $549. So I think I'll give them a shot. I'm not sure in the gas tuning world, but on diesels all of your tuners can get pretty close. Plus I already asked them a couple questions and they replied real quick and willing to work with me. When I finally bite the bullet I'll let ya guys know.

What I would like to do is get a nice intake and cut off the cats, and leave my magnaflow on. That with a proper tune would be awesome

From the little reading I've done the 2 biggest improvements are tune and headers. Removing cats is very little improvement. An intake results were almost null. Best result I've read of was opening up the fender side of the air box and fender opening and a good tune. I'm gonna get 3 efi live tunes from 5 star tuning opening up my airbox and replacing my muffler and that's probably all I'll do.

I'd talk to Black Bear Performance (blackbearperformance.com). They can do a lot for tuning of these engines and they are a vendor here as well.

I've been searching around a little and talked to them. You get 2 tunes, each for a different octane. They've tuned over 12000 GM vehicles. That's pretty impressive. I also didn't realize they do free retunes for how long you own the vehicle. Also from all the praises for bbp. Maybe that is the best way to go. I really just want the torque management toned down and trans shifting refined if possible.

Anyone have a video of the 6.0 with the magnaflow 12909 and no cats? I looked all over YouTube and I only found 1 with that exact setup and it's just some guy revving the piss out of it in park. I'd like to hear what it sounds like driving around
