Happy Memorial Day

I can't believe no one has said it yet (or maybe I missed it), but I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. :smash:

Memorial Day has always been one of my most favorite holidays simply becasue of the nature of the holiday, but there's also been other reason that go back to childhood days.

- It's always meant the start of summer vacation, although it's not quite as long now that I'm supposedly and adult.

- We always went to my mamaw and papaw's houses, in Kentucky, for the weekend. Many times, that's when my 2-3 week, and sometimes month long stay with them started. Simple country life, riding my bike for miles but only in about a one hundred yard stretch of the road because I wasn't allowed to go any further, throwing rocks at snakes in the creek accross the road, getting papaw mad because we were climbing on the big propane tank in the yard, shooting his BB gun, fishing in the pond, watching wrestling with my mom's dad, going on the paper route with my dad's mom, watching the Indy 500 (and World 600, once they started showing it on TV. I still do that though. ), helping out in the gardens and tobacco fields, and getting to drive the tractor around the fields just for fun, and just sitting on the porch in the evening eating ice cream. I miss those days, and wish every year that I could still do that with them. Those are some of my best memories.

Hope everyone had a great one.

:D X infinity!

Happy Memorial Day and God Bless those who have given their blood and their lives to defend this country. This is something we as Americans need to remember every single not just one day a year. We need to keep their sacrifices in mind every single day. They gave their lives for our freedoms and our Constitution, and it is about time all Americans, especially our politicans start remember that.

And to those who serve today, hooah. :smash::D:lol:

We spend Memorial Day with my fiancee's grandfather every year. He's a WWII veteran who earned three Purple Hearts, the first of which on D-Day at Utah Beach. He was one of the first ones off the boats that day and was severely wounded by a German sniper. He remembers that day like it was last week and can tell you all about it. When my fiancee's father was born his dad was able to come home for three days to be with his family, then had to go to his unit (4th Infantry). He didn't see his son again until he was nearly three years old and earned all three Purple Hearts in the interim.

Spending time with him really puts things into perspective and makes the true meaning of Memorial Day really hit home. God Bless our military personnel.

Had the tail end of the weekend off, which was nice. It is true that we shouldn't lose sight of the meaning behind the day, and it is something we should appreciate each day, like many of the other freedoms we have been given.

*Climbs atop the soapbox*

If the younger crowd(myself included at 28 I hope) thinks back to the gradeschool days...we remember mom and dad talking about WWI and WWII and such and how they heard the stories of those times. And we thought we'd never have to worry about anything like that. Then with the Gulf War and 09/11...our comfort level changed. Let us not forget where we came from, nor lose sight of where we are and where we want to be.

*steps down*
