Tail gate latch

Ever since I've had this truck the drivers side tail gate has been loose. I found out that the previous owner had somehow bent that side next to the latch. No problem, i removed the tail light and straighten out that bend. Well every very weeks or so I have to redue that to get the tail gate to set tight(without play in it). Is there anyway that I can strenghten the sheet metal around the pin that the tail gate latches to??

I though of used some sheet metal in a L shaped(or those mounting brackets for steel shelfs) and placing that on top/bottom of that pin and putting screws in it to hold

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!!!

I'm not 100% what you mean, can you take a picture of it? I think you can replace those metal pieces as well which might solve your problem permanently (if it's the pieces that I'm thinking about).
