bowtie_pasta Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 Looking for some opinions here. My old jack is toast and I need a new reliable one that doesn't cost too much. What do you guys think about this one? US General Racing Jack It looks ok, but I'm wondering if 3000lbs. will do everything I need. Also maximum height is only 17.5". I only do basic home mechanic maintenance. Oil changes and stuff like that. I know it would definitely be a step up from what I was using, but I want to make sure I'm not wasting my money. If anyone can recommend a better deal somewhere, please point the way. Thanks

It looks pretty nice, very light. I have a 3 ton floor jack and it feels like it weighs 3 tons too. Northern Tool is selling basically the same jack for $549.00. Go for it...
99silveradoz71 Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 Sears sometimes runs a package deal with a 3 ton and some 2 ton or so jackstands. I had a 3&1/2 AC Delco purchased at Murray's here. It was a jack in the box(pun intended) and a metal piece broke 1 time when I had it supporting Blue, so I had to use the bottle jack. Murray's took it back and let me exchange. So I went with a 2+ floor model. I have 2- 6 ton jackstands though, so once I get Blue up, I slide those under and she's not going anywhere.
bowtie_pasta Posted May 28, 2003 Author Posted May 28, 2003 So I guess what I'm wondering is if a 3000lb. rated jack is fine for lifting light trucks/trucks (that's only 1 1/2 tons)? I always use jackstands too once I get it up in the air. Maybe I'll just go to the store and have a looksee.

That was my concern too, but the way the guy at Murray's Auto explained it to me...you're never really lifting the complete weight of the vehicle on the jack at 1 time...by jacking 1 corner at a time, you're only dealing with a portion of that weight. The key for me in my mind was a good set of stands.
bowtie_pasta Posted May 28, 2003 Author Posted May 28, 2003 That's what I was thinking too. One corner at a time could only be what, maybe 1000-1500lbs? I called Harbor Freight today and they are out of stock, told me to call back Friday. Said they move a lot of those jacks.
bowtie_pasta Posted May 30, 2003 Author Posted May 30, 2003 Well I went ahead and got the aluminum racing jack yesterday (in blue). Got it home and unpacked and I must say what a nice looking piece of equipment. Very beefy and strong looking. Gave it a quick test out and it seems to do the job just fine. And the blue adds just that touch of class...for a jack LOL . Anyway, I checked the ad again today on the website and they lowered the price to $149 for the silver $159 for the colors . So I call up the store and tell them and they said to bring my receipt back and they would refund the difference. How cool is that? When I got there I mentioned I thought all the colors were the same price and had I known I would have just gotten the plain silver anyway. Dude was so cool he gave me the $149 price anyway. So today was a good day!!!

The last time I went to there store I told them they had a cheaper price on the internet and they matched it, with no add.
bowtie_pasta Posted June 4, 2003 Author Posted June 4, 2003 Yeah, they certainly blow out prices on tools. Some of the stuff may not be the highest quality, but for the price they can't be beat!
bowtie_pasta Posted June 4, 2003 Author Posted June 4, 2003 PS - I changed the oil on both trucks this last weekend...with the NEW jack! I was racing around my shop with a sense of urgency...just like the pits, . Hey, it's a RACING jack!
99silveradoz71 Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 I like carrying my jack around the garage/yard sometimes...kind of resemble a gorilla at times doing so.
