2015 delete daytime running lights?

i know im gonna catch hell for this and that a lot of guys want even fancier lights..but id rather them just not be on. if I remember I turn em off.

 

as everyone that drives knows...chevy gmc products are notorious for the drl's going out. one headlight on is famous for gm products..any of em..

 

so I awked the dealer and he said that for liability reasons they wouldn't do it....really..liability...I can turn em off any time I want..

 

i just was wondering with all the knowledge here about headlights and bulbs and rewiring all that stuff someone might be able to tell me if it can be done or not..

 

also a footnote..i had the bulb upgrade and the bcm reprogram for the chitty headlights and the difference is outstanding. hopefully bulb life wont be too bad. another reason for the drl delete....

 

on the 2015 we have just the one bulb..no led's so it burns all the time...id like to extend the life of it

If it's not a Canadian truck you can take the spring out if the headlight switch and keep it in the off position. That's what I did to my '14 and works flawlessly.

I have no issue with deactivating it but in all honesty the headlights burning out seems to be a thing of the past. My 2011 was on the factory lights with 72k or so when I traded it last year. I never bothered turning them off so they were on tons. My 2003 however did burn through those DRL-specific bulbs like it was a sport however.

So you know how you take the switch to left and it springs back to auto but it turns off the DRL. Well taking the spring out keeps it in the off position until you manipulate like the old pick ups.

 

It's pretty simple to do just remove the fuse box panel and gently tug in the bezel for the headlights and it'll slide out. Probably the most nerve racking thing to do. After that unplug the headlight switch and remove it from the bezel. Pop off the back of the switch. I used a small flathead screw driver.

 

Once apart you'll see the internals along with a small flat metal piece. Don't mind that it's to make sure your switch lines up with the different positions. The spring itself doesn't look like a typical spring one would think of. More like a metal wire with a loop in the middle to maintain tension. Take it out reassembly everything, put it back together and your all set.

 

Like I said though if your in Canada it doesn't work. The lights are wired differently. Also mines a '14 Silverado and worked like a charm.

 

Also I'm not very good at explaining things in text so I apologize in advance if this is difficult to follow.

Lmao liability.

 

I also turn mine off every time, if i remember. Not that much of a hassle vs pulling stuff to get that spring, but i dont really care to have the light on during the day time serves no purpose

It takes less than 15 mins to do the whole procedure not bad at all.

im gonna do mine on vaca this week. do ya pull the blk corner off or the silver insert . also does the knob need to some off?

well I didn't take any pics but it was so easy its not real. took me 10 mins. took the fuse cover panel off. the headlight sw bezel pops right off then. unplug the sw..pry the little tabs back and take the sw off the bezel.. then pry the tabs back on the each side of the sw and lift the guts out. the little wire spring is in the corner. lift it up and out .throw it over yer right shoulder. .snap it all back together and no more running lights!

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
