6disc Bose / XM Radio

I have an 03 Envoy with the 6 disc in dash Bose Stereo, I like it factory and would like to keep it this way. The radio has am/fm button, and cd/aux button. Since thier is nothing (like tape player) that the AUX button functions, is there a way to upgrade the radio so it has the XM capabilities as if it were a factory xm radio (thus no aftermarket screen or anything).

Thanks,

I'd talk to a dealer about this. My '03 has XM, but it was a factory install. If you don't want to have an extra display hanging out, but want to keep the factory look then you might have to replace the whole unit. But maybe its just as simple as adding a XM receiver?

Ok, this is what I remember reading on GM's techlink (can't find the article right now).

You can upgrade to an uplevel radio, but it will require the GM tech to call and get a VCI number to let them program it. However, that was just for an uplevel radio, and didn't discuss XM.

I'm not sure if it's possible because XM requires a digital receiver module and the special antenna. So you'd need to tear apart the front passenger's area to install the receiver, rip out the headliner for the XM satellite antenna, and finally buy the new radio, then there's programming it, etc. Probably cost prohibitive because of all this work.

From my research, I have found out the following:

GM likes to make money and for some reasons related to same (like peddling the Delphi units), has clamped down on the part that we need to activate XM radio.

That's too bad because this module could simply plug into our Bose head unit, and then a GM service technician (go to a metro area not Blink, Texas) and the Tech 2 tool can turn on the module and it will work as if it were a factory option.

I don't give up easy, I'm having some fun with this challenge. Once I do finally find the part number for the module, I will post it here. If I can't secure a unit, then I will troll the salvage yards until someone wipes out a truck with this module and purchase it that way. Either way, there is NO way I'm giving up my rear seat controls, steering controls, etc. Or doing something even lamer like turning a good clean digital signal into an analog signal and back again just because GM can't figure out a way to make some more money off something that should be really simple.

As far as "ripping apart dashes and headliners..." Well lets just say that High school kids at Circut City install easier things than this stuff everyday, it's not rocket science. Although I must say that I will do it myself because I'm just plain hard to please.

See my post I just made here in another thread: Soundgate Adaptor

Looks like it's the ticket for adding XM to '03-'04 trucks with the Bose (single or 6-disc changer units).

My truck didn't come with XM but this wouldn't be too bad and might consider it.

Have you done this yet? I have the Bose 6 disc setup in my 03 Sierra and would love to add XM radio. I don't have the cassette adapter so that is out and not real in favor of the FM modulation as heard that does not sound that good. Optimally I would like to have the factory setup but if I can add XM and keep mt steering wheel controls, Onstar, etc. for a lot less, I am interested....

No, I haven't added XM as of yet. I read about this adaptor and did some poking around to find out more about it. xmfan.com is a good site to search.

The Soundgate/Blitzsafe adaptor allows you to add a Pioneer XM receiver or Pioneer CD changer to a factory deck (03-04's). Apparently they just came out with this not too long ago. People that have it said it sounds great and much better than the FM modulator that was previously the only other way to interface the factory head unit. No additional display also makes for a clean install.

I'm on the fence whether or not I really NEED XM. We have quite a few channels in my area to listen to that cover many genres. If I lived back in ND where there isn't as much choice, I'd have already signed up! For about $250 in hardware (receiver, antenna, adaptor) you can get into XM. Subscription extra.

I already have a 6 disc changer so don't need to add one of those, altho something that plays MP3's would be cool... I also have a lot of stations here in Milwaukee but I think XM would be kinda cool to have as well if it could integrate into the OE system cleanly. With those adapters do you need to use their display or can you use the one built into the radio? Just trying to think of a way to avoid having another "screen" to look at.

How/where does the adaptor hook into? Are there spare jacks on the Bose radio that allow you to connect into?

Trippin,

thanks for posting all those pics of the install, it helped me understand how well it integrated into your system. Do you have the steering wheel controls and Onstar? If so did it affect those at all? Does Onstar still mute the radio when a call comes in?

You mention "only 6 presets" how would you get 12?

My truck is an LT so it has Onstar and all the goodies. Everything works! The steering wheel controls, Onstar muting etc.

I've spoken to Soundgate about the 6 vs 12 presets and at this time they have no plans to correct it.

I got factory XM install, the antenna is much cooler and you can order this one instead of most of the crappy ones they have for other recievers. Seems the Antennas are all interchangable that I know of or have seen. For me I would have to work backwards, and put in a new reciever and radio. Oh well.
